Job DescriptionJob Summary Temporary Teaching Assistant (TA) positions for courses offered to high school students as part of Ithaca College's Summer Pre-College Programs. TAs are required to be physically present on campus during class times, which occur on weekdays between 09:30 - 11:30 am, 1:00 - 3:00 pm, and for Theatre Conservatory applicants add 3:00 - 4:30 pm. TAs may also be required to be present outside of class time to complete other duties as assigned by the faculty. Applicants should be generally available from 9-5 pm weekdays. The Summer Pre-College Programs will operate from July 15 through August 02, 2024. TAs are expected to be available starting on July 10, 2024 should their faculty need assistance. Duties and responsibilities Teaching Assistants perform many leadership, organizational, and classroom management tasks to support both faculty and program participants. Duties and responsibilities include:
- Helping faculty with lesson preparation, including arranging the classroom, collecting or distributing materials, setting up equipment, and any other support needs as requested by faculty
- Leading discussion groups, providing oversight for projects, or reviewing lessons with participants on a one-on-one basis or in small groups
- Giving extra help to participants who need special accommodations or are struggling
- Tracking attendance and assisting faculty with grading assignments
- Collaborating with faculty regarding participants' concerns or behavioral issues and recommending solutions
- Reinforcing course rules and regulations with participants
- Serving as a role model for participants both personally and professionally, including modeling behaviors that are consistent with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Qualifications Candidates should express genuine interest in working with a diverse group of students in a learning environment and have a basic understanding of human, social, and educational development. Candidates with prior experience as a teaching assistant or working with youth in a camp environment, a history of providing leadership to a variety of age groups, and the ability to foster the development of a community through a variety of methods are preferred. All teaching assistants must consent to and be able to pass a federal and state criminal history and sex offender background check by the college, comply with the Minor Protection Policy, attend a health and safety meeting, and be able to practice and adhere to the methods and guidelines as stated in the Ithaca College Safety and Medical Plan. All TAs must demonstrate proof of full vaccination and booster doses, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, against COVID-19 disease and must abide by all COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place during the summer college program. Preference will be given to current Ithaca College students. Compensation This position is compensated at an hourly rate of $15.00 per hour. TAs selected for the Summer College for High School Students will work 25-30 hours per week. An on-campus housing and meal plan is available at a reduced rate for students through Conference and Events Services. - Wildlife Tracking and Nature Observation (need 01 TA)- same course as in Environmental Science
- Foundations of Health, Human Performance, and Wellness (need 01 TA)- a foundational HSHP course
- Introductory Astronomy (need 01 TA) - like your basic Intro to Astronomy course.
- Summer Theatre Conservatory (need 04 TAs) - need TAs for all aspects of Musical Theatre
