QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Passed physical examination.
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
  • Willing and able to climb a six foot stepladder and lift forty pounds.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds and Head Custodian PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  • Shovels, plows, and/or salts walks, driveways, parking areas and steps, as appropriate.
  • Checks daily to insure that all exit doors are open, all panic bars are working properly, and all entrance doors, but one, are locked during the hours of building occupancy.
  • Daily sweeps/vacuums classrooms, empties wastebaskets and cleans/disinfects furniture, and additional tasks as assigned.
  • Cleans corridors after school each day and/or during the day when their condition requires.
  • Scrubs and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary (entry doors and surrounding glass should be kept especially clean).
  • Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
  • Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  • Cleans all chalkboards/whiteboards as needed.
  • Makes building repairs under the direction of the Head Custodian/Principal and/or Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
  • Reports needed repairs promptly to the Head Custodian/Principal.
  • Reports immediately to the Head Custodian/Principal any damage to school property.
  • Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance required by the Principal.
  • Assumes responsibility for building security such as the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  • Reports an inventory of supplies, equipment and fuel, and requisitions such needed replacements to the Head Custodian far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his/her duties.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Head Custodian/Principal.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
  • Performs summer maintenance activities including, but not limited to, the following:
    • Move classroom and office furniture and prepare area for floor cleaning and finishing.
    • Power scrub, strip and wax floors.
    • Clean lighting fixtures throughout building and replace bulbs in a timely manner.
    • Paint wall and door trim as needed.
    • Assist maintenance personnel with lawn moving.
    • Trim/pull weeds around building and playground when needed.
    21. Demonstrates cooperation, courtesy and willingness to improve conditions and situations involving staff, parents and students. 22. Attends regularly, dresses appropriately (wears district provided shirts and close toed shoes), requests approval for time off and reports for work on time. 23. Performs other duties as assigned by the Head Custodian, building Principal and/or Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
