DEFINITION

Under general supervision and direction of the credentialed school nurse, will perform a variety of health related services for students; administer basic first aid, attend to ill and injured children; perform other necessary functions pertaining to student health and specialized health-care procedures, thus ensuring that medical and physical needs of all students are met in accordance with state law and district policy. Assist in health education and wellness programs, and perform other related duties as assigned or required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class are established to assist the credentialed school nurse in carrying out the basic objectives of the school/district student health program. This position is characterized by the responsibility to work independently, the ability to demonstrate appropriate routine health assessments, to make referrals, to work effectively with both students and adults, and to assist in maintaining the operations necessary for the school health office. Duties may include, but are not limited to; administering first aid, CPR and medications. Providing specialized health care services such as toileting, catheterization, suctioning, G-tube feeding and medications via G-tube, colostomy care, and other services as prescribed by a medical doctor. Training is provided for these services by a credentialed school nurse.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Screen and check students for injuries and complaints of illness or injury; make a determination of course of action; administer first aid, disinfect and bandage cuts, abrasions and burns; observe for signs of shock and other emergency situations; perform CPR if student is breathless and/or pulseless. Notify a parent or guardian regarding ill or injured students and refer health and emergency concerns to the credentialed district nurse as necessary. Determine the need for emergency supervisory or administrative assistance. Complete accident reports and record all procedures, treatments, outcomes and dispositions on a computerized health services log and program. Dispense prescription and over-the-counter medications as authorized by a physician and parent following closely controlled procedures under training received from the credentialed school nurse. Record dosages and maintain security in storage of medications according to California Education Code. Provide a quiet, calming and comfortable atmosphere for ill and injured students. Perform specialized health services procedures for students on an as needed basis as identified by the student's licensed physician and school nurse. Screen students suspected of having communicable disease, notify parents, district nurse, send notices, exclude as necessary. Prepare and maintain a variety of health records, files and reports. Maintain and check immunization records, including follow up with parents/guardians of incomplete health records. Maintain confidentiality of all student information and records. Assist the district nurse in setting up vision, hearing, scoliosis and dental screenings, as required and perform necessary follow up as directed. Assist in disaster preparedness plans and drills. Check and stock emergency first aid kits for classrooms and for field trips. Prepare and maintain health office bulletin boards. requisition office and medical supplies and maintain health office facility and equipment in a clean and sanitary manner. Refer suspected child abuse/neglect/serious injuries to the district nurse, appropriate school administrator and child protective services as appropriate.

Attend monthly health technician meetings and participate in traiing and updates as needed. Participate in Individualized School Healthcare Plan meetings and carry out ISHP plans and emergency plans for students. Assist families in locating agencies that can help them with health problems. Perform related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

First aid procedures, health and safety practices;

Basic medical and health related terminology;

Clean procedural techniques;

Specialized health care procedures pertaining to student health;

Basic symptoms of communicable childhood or adolescent related illnesses and diseases;

Modern office practices, procedures and equipment;

Appropriate and standard English usage, spelling and punctuation.

Ability to:

Perform CPR and maintain valid certification form an authorized agency;

Type, operate and understand basic computer and computer programs;

Perform clerical duties such as filing and duplicating;

Work cooperatively and effectively with children and adults;

Work independently with minimal direction;

Analyze situations and determine appropriate response necessary;

Learn and follow a variety of treatments and procedures for specialized health care services;

Communicate effectively both written and orally;

Maintain records and prepare necessary reports;

Maintain confidentiality with staff, students, and parents;

Demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy;

Work effectively in a multi-ethnic setting.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year of paid experience performing clerical, record keeping, health related services, or public contact in a physician's office, hospital or related setting. Type at a rate sufficient to effectively perform the typing duties required for this position.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License; have an acceptable driving record to qualify for insurability with the District's insurance carrier; Possession of a Standard First Aid Certificate; Possession of a current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate, both certificates must be issued by an authorized agency.

SKILLS: Type at a rate sufficient to effectively perform the typing duties required for this position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Be able to furnish an automobile during working hours and be willing to drive in the performance of assigned duties.

Physical abilities: The ability to lift up to 60 lbs. assisting and transferring students in prescribed medical equipment (i.e. wheelchair).
