This is a substitute position, on an as-needed basis and does not have benefits. This position performs responsible paraprofessional duties at the Nelson County Library, providing all library circulation services, routine reference, and assisting library patrons, under the general supervision of the Branch Manager. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.Duties may vary based on assigned branch:
  • Provides all library circulation services, including checking library materials in and out, registering patrons for library cards, placing holds, and collecting fines and fees.
  • Checks returned lending materials for damage, normal wear and tear, and missing included items.
  • Maintains serial collections by processing new material and withdrawing old material.
  • Processes new books by checking to correct catalog information.
  • Prepares books to be withdrawn by processing material in system and generating paperwork associated with removal of material.
  • Performs computer assistance for patrons.
  • May be asked to perform notaries.
  • Provides readers advisory and reference services.
  • Manages ILL (interlibrary loan) requests.
  • Answers telephone and handles patron inquiries, both in person and on the telephone.
  • Shelves and maintains library materials by call number.
  • Assists with weeding collection; withdraws books that have been weeded, removing library markings, changing status in catalog, and arranging to return books to vendors.
  • Prepares bank deposits for branch funds.
  • May be required to maintain branch email address and voicemail box, following up with patrons as needed.
  • Maintains branch technology by cleaning patron computers, troubleshooting issues, monitoring IT tickets, replacing paper and toner, and assisting other staff with technology questions.
  • Prepares signage, booklists, displays, program calendars, and basic programs to promote library resources and community interaction.
  • Assists Jefferson Madison Regional Library staff with projects.
  • Requires a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Follows library procedures for opening, operating, and closing library branch.
  • May assume responsibility for branch in absence of Branch Manager.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
Education, Experience and Skills Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.
  • High School or GED and previous experience working in a public customer service environment and working with Windows and the internet.

  • Previous experience working in a public customer service environment and working with Windows and the internet.
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Preferred:
  • Library work experience.
  • Knowledge of library computer software programs.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Required to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.

  • Work requires pushing/pulling, standing for extended periods, stooping, bending, and carrying.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware:
  • Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; book trucks and carts, and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in office environment where there may be exposure to computer screen for extended periods of time, monitor glare and dust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
