Position Summary: Paraeducators are required to work with students with special needs under the direction of a special education case manager to assist in the implementation of IEP goals and objectives. Supports and works in cooperation with the Principal, Director of Special Education, and assigned teacher in performing the varied tasks which must be dealt with in a classroom, cafeteria, playground, and throughout the school. The ideal candidate has prior experience in this role, and is flexible to adapt to the changing nature of the demands of the class. They will work closely with an assigned teacher and support them in their duties. Typical tasks include working with students in groups and individually during lessons, assisting with lesson plans and materials. The thriving paraprofessional is caring, compassionate, and committed to each student's success. Supervisor/Evaluation: Receives general supervision and performance evaluation from Principal, with significant input from teachers. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with children individually and in small groups to reinforce basic skills and to check their use of instructional materials under the supervision of the teacher.
- As assigned, support implementation of students' behavior management plans under the supervision of the responsible certified special education staff.
- Assist the teacher in the development and construction of materials to be used as reinforcement activities.
- Help to prepare the room, materials, and equipment for daily use.
- Provide routine non-teaching classroom procedures.
- Participate in staff meetings and in-service programs as requested by the principal or teacher.
- Provide supervision for non-classroom activities as directed by the principal (bus arrival/departure, lunch room, and playground).
- Plan with the teacher the execution of follow-up activities to reinforce initial instruction provided by the teacher.
- As assigned, support implementation of students' Individual Education Program goals and objectives under the supervision of the responsible certified special education staff.
- Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, staff, and community, following and upholding school rules and standards.
- Safely supervise students in both instructional and assessment activities in and out of the classroom.
Skills:
- Effective communication skills; oral, written and visual with adults and children
- Understanding of basic principles of childhood development
- Familiarity with educational software or willingness to learn
Qualifications:
- 2 years of Study of an institution of higher education or Associate's Degree (or higher) or/and completed ParaPro Assessment (min 457 score)
- Prior experience working with students with special needs strongly desired
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
- Excellent interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in early childhood development or education
- Teacher certification(s)
- Experience working with special needs students
- Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred but not required
