Job Description:The State University of New York Maritime College is currently looking to employ temporary personnel for various positions during this year's summer training aboard T. S. EMPIRE STATE. Available positions include Yeoman, Stewards, Regimental Duty Officers, and support staff. This is for the entire training period.

Due to the unique nature of the training ship, incumbents may be assigned in different capacities as the needs of the ship dictate and their background allow.

EMPIRE STATE is a public vessel solely operated for the training and licensure of cadet midshipmen. Cadets engage in classroom lectures, maintenance, watchkeeping, drills, and training exercises in preparation for their eventual licensure.

The training days are geared to maximize the experience of the cadets, and flexibility is required regarding daily scheduling of duties.

The FULL Cruise appointment is anticipated to begin May 25, 2025, and end July 29, 2025. However, you may apply and be considered for one of the following:

  • Cruise B Half: June 27, 2025 - August 1, 2025
  • Full Cruise: May 12, 2025 - August 6, 2025

    Regimental Duty OfficerDescription of Duties:

    • Serves as a mentor and training officer for cadets completing sea term activities.
    • Various administrative duties that support the cadets and ship's officers training components.
    • Assisting in the development and completion of port-call activities (if applicable).
    • Serves on watch for alcohol testing and gangway watches.
    • Completes daily health and safety inspections of cadet berthing/common areas.
    • Participates in daily musters and accountability evolutions.
    • Assists in the completion of the daily plan of the day information.
    • Supports the Senior Regimental Officer Afloat and other Regimental Officers in the completion of their daily duties both afloat and in-port.
    • Assists in the determination of random alcohol testing procedures/listings and testing.
    • Participates on the Ship's Safety Committee.

    Yeoman (Office Manager)Description of Duties:

    • Serves as the primary point of contact for cadets and ship's officers regarding Regimental duties.
    • Clerical and administrative duties that support the cadets and ship's officers training components.
    • Assists in the completion of customs documents and documentation processes.
    • Assists in the development and completion of port-call activities (if applicable).
    • Supports the Senior Regimental Officer Afloat and Regimental Officers in the completion of their daily duties both afloat and in-port.
    • Assists in the determination of random alcohol testing procedures/listings.
    • Participates on the Ship's Safety Committee.

    Requirements:Required Qualifications:

    • Active Member or Former Member of the United States Military/Merchant Marine Duty/Reserve/Veteran - For Regimental Duties Officer (RDO).
    • Demonstrated ability in teaching applicable materials - For academic appointments.
    • Recent sea experience - For operational appointments.
    • US Passport.
    • Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC).
    • Valid Medical Certificate - Note: The Medical Certificate is issued with the original MMC; however, it must be renewed every 2 years.
    • DOT/USCG Periodic Drug Testing Documentation.

    A COPY OF ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION MUST BE PROVIDED PRIOR TO THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT. IF THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION IS NOT PROVIDED BY THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT, YOUR APPLICATION CAN NO LONGER BE CONSIDERED FOR EMPLOYMENT.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Military or Merchant Marine Service (documented) - RDO.
    • Undergraduate degree completion - RDO and Yeoman.
    • Experience with clerical and administrative duties - RDO and Yeoman.
    • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching professional subject matter - Academics.
    • Demonstrated communication skills.

    Additional Information:Salary/Compensation: The salary is based on a daily rate of pay and will commensurate with license, certification, and experience. Housing and all meals are included while aboard the EMPIRE STATE VII Training Ship.

    This is a temporary appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
