Position Summary:
Under direction of department managers, performs highly responsible supervisory work and/or performs the more complex skilled work in the maintenance and repair of Botanical Garden physical plant, mechanical equipment, and facilities; performs related work.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Directs, supports and assists the work of (engineering) maintainers, assistant (engineering) maintainers, and other associates in the performance of general maintenance work or specialized work related to all heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including refrigeration, cooling towers, steam and hot water boiler plants, air and water distribution, automated building management systems and related mechanical equipment.
Supervises and maintains safe and proper operation, including diagnostics, maintenance, repairs and system overhauls of related equipment, and work in and around all Garden facilities including electrical, emergency backup power generation, plumbing equipment, emergency response to equipment failure and safety compliance. Performs the more complex skilled work including learning and managing the computerized Preventive Work Order Systems.
Examines the need for repairs (trouble-shoot); estimates labor time and job costs and submits for approval orders for necessary materials and equipment.
Checks materials used and inspects completed work. Inspects the work of outside contractors for conformance with contract or work order specifications.
Monitors and assists in snow removal as needed to access equipment or otherwise done by the engineering maintainers.
Qualifications:
High school graduation or GED equivalency; certification from trade school in HVACR and 3-5 years of experience in building mechanical systems, construction or general facility maintenance work
Type II EPA Certification for reclamation of refrigerants
NYFD Refrigeration License
A valid driver's license
Proficient in all HVAC, Electrical, and other Engineering specialty tools
Familiar with Computerized Building Management Systems (BMS)
Available to work on weekends and holidays as needed –
Shift work required; willing to work overtime if needed
Must pass a written and practical exam focused on Engineering skills and knowledge
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Ability to move over 30 pounds
Baseline Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday 8am - 4pm
