Job Summary: Under indirect supervision, coordinates and supervises the daily operation of the Central Sterile Processing Department, Durable Medical Equipment (DME) and distribution of specialty carts throughout the facility. Oversees staff productivity and ensures production is standardized and compliant with the Joint Commission, AAMI, OSHA and SFH/Department policies and procedures.
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification preferred.
Work Experience: Minimum 3 years related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Effective written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Proficient skills with automated systems. Proven skills in teambuilding, problem-solving, creativity, and leadership abilities. Organized and self-motivated with an attention to detail. Demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing principles, infection control procedures, and OSHA regulations as well as regulatory standards issued by AAMI, Joint Commission and AORN. Proven ability to delegate and to conduct business with a high level of professionalism. Demonstrated time management skills. Basic to moderate PC and word processing skills.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Participates in continuing education programs and courses, including programs on federal and local regulations; personnel and material management programs; programs on financial management and leadership skills; and courses directly related to supervisory position, with special emphasis on infection prevention and control, safety and the principles and methods of sterile processing. Responsible for comprehensive knowledge of pertinent state and federal regulations. Monitors, coaches and evaluates department staff to maintain compliance with CDC, OSHA, EPA, AAMI, State, APIC and Joint Commission guidelines and standards, as well as established hospital and departmental policies. Performs scheduled competency reviews of staff and informs manager of results; takes action to correct any lapses in technique. Communicates appropriately with CSP manager, internal customers and peers to define and resolve problems and promote continuity of service within department. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of sterile processing and uses this knowledge to assist management with troubleshooting environmental, equipment and performance issues. Actively supports and pursues Continuous Quality Improvement for Sterile Processing Department and organization as a whole. Monitors productivity and quality of work performed and reports issues to manager while working with staff to improve both. Assists with recruitment, interviewing and selection of new employees. Conducts department orientation, staff development planning and assists Manager with educational programs to maintain high staff performance standards. Performs rounding with Operating Room (OR) Clinical Supervisors to maintain open communication and effective customer service management. Addresses customer issues quickly and effectively and escalates to management when prudent. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by assisting manager with timekeeping, helping minimize overtime, and reducing waste and over- processing of instruments. Actively and regularly monitors staff adherence to time and attendance policy.
Decision Making: Independent judgment in making decision involving non-routine problems under general supervision.
Working Relationships: Coordinates activities of others. Direct Supervision of others - No. of people supervised: (15). Prepares and gives performance evaluations. Works directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff.
