Under general supervision, the Support Services Clerk I, performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the Public Safety Department; provides customer service and performs other related duties as assigned. The number of hours worked will be determined by the needs of the department, however, incumbents may work a maximum of 28 hours per week and are expected to work evenings, weekends and holidays. This is an at-will position and incumbent serves at the pleasure of the City Manager or designee. Examples of DutiesDuties include but are not limited to the following: uses the city's computer programs to enter and retrieve information and maintain and update database records; uses a personal computer to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, forms and other materials; provides information regarding City and department programs and services as well as referrals to appropriate city, county or other agencies, in person or over the telephone; records and files a variety of information; operates a variety of office machines and equipment; may assist with the preparation of weekly and monthly reports; may be required to drive the Public Safety Resource Command Vehicle or other vehicles; and may assist with providing support services to deputies and other personnel.Duties may also consist of the following when assigned to support the following divisions: Field Division: Assists with planning, and organizing events for crossing guards; maintains inventory and distribution of uniforms and equipment; assists with completing and processing timecards; performs special detail tasks for crossing guards and community safety officers; performs data tracking and entry related to radar trailers traffic safety service requests, and Award of Valor nominations. Program and Event Division: Participates in community relations; researches relevant crime prevention and emergency preparedness topics; compiles monthly crime data and writes monthly public education articles; assists in planning, coordinating, and facilitating special events and programs; participates in community outreach for schools, residents, Lakewood businesses and seniors. QualificationsEducation & Experience: Graduation from high school (or G.E.D equivalent) and two years of experience performing general clerical duties.Licenses: Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record.Knowledge of: Modern information processing practices and procedures, including business correspondence, filing and standard office equipment operation; use of personal computers using Windows-based software for word processing and other tasks; correct English usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation; telephone and receptionist techniques; and principles of customer service.Skills and Abilities to: Perform clerical and administrative work involving the use of independent judgment; learn to effectively use the city's computer programs to enter and retrieve information; operate a personal computer using Windows-based software; tactfully and courteously respond to routine questions in person and over the telephone; promote the City's policy of providing outstanding customer service; and establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Physical and Mental Demands: Ability to see and hear within normal ranges; dexterity to read, write, type, operate office equipment such as a computer, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, pencils, pens, scissors, stapler; communicate orally, in writing and over the telephone; understand written and verbal directions; and lift and carry up to 25 pounds, stand walk, and sit for extended periods of time.
