Summary: Supervises and provides direct care to surgical patients and special attention to the (specialty) patient population. Has accountability for the daily coordination of patient flow and care delivery. Serves as a resource for the interpretation and implementation of policies, procedures, practice and regulatory standards related to promoting a culture of safety and creating a safe healing environment for patients, patient care staff, medical staff and families/visitors. Demonstrates discretion and sound judgment in dealing with clinical and organizational issues.   • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the health system and acts as a clinical resource for surgical services personnel within the specialty using evidence-based knowledge and prevailing standards. Performs daily tasks of the unit, as delegated, including, daily communications, materials management, and works as a Leader in charge of the daily flow of information and detailed handling of the assigned surgical specialty. Verifies that the appropriate equipment and supplies are ready and available.
  • Coordinates surgical patient care with other members of the surgical team in preparation of the surgical case.
  • Maintains and demonstrates an appropriate degree of clinical expertise, clinical proficiency, and serves as a clinical resource/expert for other team members in managing and solving issues related to specialty area of responsibility. Collaborates with the Surgical Services IS Specialist in ensuring that preference cards are correct and updates are made, as needed.
  • Assists surgical personnel in evaluating practices and creating strategies for further improvement of physician satisfaction and better patient outcomes by demonstrating effective communication and collaboration of skills with members of the surgical specialty team, SPD team members and other team members.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with physicians to enhance quality practice. Interprets, supports, and practices the mission and philosophy of the Health System and department/service by working to resolve issues in a timely manner, Investigates unusual occurrences, and follows appropriate reporting procedure.
  • Provides educational information and works as a resource in coordination with the surgical educator regarding surgical team education specific to specialty and organizes quality performance improvement activities within the specialty. Pursues professional growth and participates in professional organization membership of specialty
  • Participates in the order preparation, maintenance, and inventory of instrumentation and specific needs of the specialty. Coordinates with SPD/OR materials management in the acquisition of instrumentation. Collaborates with the SPD team lead to ensure quality in instrumentation sets and make changes, as needed. Uses effective conflict resolution techniques to achieve maximum outcomes
  • Mentors and works as a role model professional to educate team members within the specialty as required by collecting, analyzing, and applying information related to the specialty to facilitate collaboration and negotiation of any needs within the specialty. Creates an environment in which team members can realize personal growth and development through active participation. Assimilates knowledge gained from conferences, workshops, seminars, and professional literature into practice. Develops mechanisms that facilitate transmission of new knowledge to other team members.
  • Participates in the interview for specialty team member selection.
  • Serves as a role model of professional behavior and acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of all appropriate information.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an NLN approved Diploma, or Associated Degree Program; BSN preferred
  • 3 years RN experience. Supervisory experience preferred. National certification as clinically appropriate preferred
  • Current RN License to practice in the State of Georgia
Knowledge/Skills/ AbilitiesAmerican Heart Association BLS Certification required within first week of orientation and maintained throughout employment. ACLS, PALS, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) or Instructor Certification if applicable to area within 6 months of hire and maintained throughout employment. Knowledge of: Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures both organizational and departmental; regulatory standards ( the Joint Commission, OSHA, NPSG); demonstration of leadership skills and empowerment principlesSkill in: Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; clear and effective verbal and written communications; Leadership principles; clinically excellence Utilization of personal computers for clinical database systems. Ability to: Establish and maintain effective working relationships; Interpret policies and procedures; identify non-compliance and take appropriate action; work independently; maintain flexibility to adapt to a variety of workload assignments; Incorporate cultural and age appropriate care into all aspects of communication and patient care. Able to perform responsibilities with frequent interruptions and high degree of stress. Works with moderate exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature.
