Job Description :

Materials Engineering requires a Metallurgy Laboratory Technician to continue to fulfill its necessary functions to support new technology and new material evaluations, submarine construction, Welding Engineering, and Materials Engineering. The candidate must be comfortable working in a fast paced, team oriented environment. Ultimately, the individual will become competent in all areas of responsibility of the Metallurgy Laboratory, which includes but is not limited to preparation and evaluation of macro- and microspecimens, documenting findings, use of digital microscopic equipment, specimen layout, mechanical property testing, specification interpretation, and shipyard acid etching. Training will be provided in areas of inexperience. Upon hiring, qualification in the Nuclear Water Chemistry Lab is a requirement. Maintaining these qualifications indefinitely is a requirement for the position.

Visual acuity is necessary to perform most assignments, and the candidate must be able to pass the eye test required for preparation and evaluation of weld metallographic specimens. The individual will be trained in acid etching in support of the shipyard, which requires mobility and flexibility since it is commonly performed onboard ships in hard to reach areas and in confined spaces. The individual must exhibit strong communication and team skills due to the need to frequently interact with Operations, Welding Engineering and Materials Engineering customers.

It is desirable that the candidate possesses a basic understanding of metallurgical principles.
