THE POSITION

Are you interested in performing specialized tax discovery work to identify potential taxpayers and help ensure that businesses contribute tax monies due to the Commonwealth? If you are skilled at reviewing and analyzing tax data and related information to make tax determinations, join the Bureau of Registration and Taxpayer Management Discovery Division as a Tax Discovery Specialist. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Tax Discovery Specialist analyzes and evaluates computer cross-matches with Federal tax records, other State agencies, other states, and third-party data; analyzes and evaluates business activities questionnaires to determine how business activities are conducted and what property may be owned or leased in Pennsylvania; determines whether an entity is subject to any tax administered by the department based on the entity type, Pennsylvania activities, and other relevant entity information; and evaluates and determines the correct start date for subjectivity.

With our team, you will also submit registration requests to obtain tax identification numbers and set up new tax accounts, submit corrections to taxpayer information in department systems, notify taxpayers in writing of their obligation to file tax returns and pay monies due, monitor cases for the filing of tax returns, contact taxpayers to enforce the filing of tax returns and payment of monies due, post estimated taxes or assessments against taxpayers who have not responded to previous contacts or refuse to pay taxes due, explain tax laws and regulations of the Commonwealth that may apply to a particular case, answer taxpayers' questions about nexus standards and department policies and procedures, and compile computer records and maintains case files to track actions for case management.

Additionally, you will research tax records and related information using resources including the PaTH tax system, BRIDGES, and any other software needed for daily work activities. This includes utilizing the internet to search for nexus related information involving individual and business activities, product offerings, sales procedures and methods, business structures and relationships, clarification of taxpayer identification, and correct address confirmations. Work Schedule and Additional Information:

+ Full-time employment

+ Work hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.

+ Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time, apart from in-office training. Full-time telework status employees are required to work in-office once per month. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

+ Two years of experience in the review and examination of tax documents and making tax liability decisions and applying tax laws and rules and regulations;or

+ Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the applicant with the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.

+ This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
