Position Function/PurposeProvides instructional assistance to students under the supervision of a certified teacher; assists in preparing, conducting, and managing classroom activities. Provides support facilitation in the general education classroom to support IEP implementation.Essential Functions1. Follow the directions of the supervisor2. Preparing materials and displays as directed Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays3. Demonstrating acceptable written and verbal skills4. Working in a cooperative manner with both teacher and students5. Assisting the teacher in maintaining student discipline6. Assisting the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care and safety of students7. Assisting the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care of equipment and teaching materials8. Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher9. Inform the teacher of any special needs or problems of individual students10. *Changing diapers for students11. *Toileting students12. *Feeding or assisting with feeding students13. *Assisting with lifting students14. *Assisting students with other self-help skills15. *Blending foods16. *Cooking foods17. *Assisting with loading and unloading students18. *All other duties as assigned by the supervisor *NOTE: A teacher assistant in special education is subject to reassignment during the year because of student population shifts, therefore, these may be additional responsibilities.Qualification Requirements1. Possess, or be willing to apply for, a TEA Educational Aide Certificate (personal expense)2. Educational Aide certificate as established by the State Board for Educator Certification. The applicant for the educational aide certificate shall 1. hold a high school diploma, the equivalent of a high school diploma, or higher; 2. have satisfied one of the following requirements: a. has three creditable years of experience, as defined in Chapter 153, Subchapter CC, of this title (relating to Commissioner's Rules on Creditable Years of Service), as either an educational aide I or II; b. has completed 30 semester credit hours of college credit with some emphasis on child growth and development or related subject areas; 3. and have experience working with students and parents as approved by the employing superintendent.Special Knowledge/ Skills:• Good people skills• Ability to work well with children and all studentsWork EnvironmentThe environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
