DescriptionPathway currently has an opening for a caring individual who desires to make a difference in the lives of young adults and adolescents. Working alongside our therapists and instructional aides as part of a collaborative team, the Teacher is responsible for planning, preparing and implementing all aspects of each student's educational goals and objectives according to their IEP. Included in this is writing progress reports, maintaining documentation, writing and maintaining IEP's, writing lesson plans and participating in the team meeting process.Applicant must be positive, energetic, flexible, and a team player that can complement Pathway's amazing culture. Having patience, strong communications skills and a good sense of humor are also highly recommended to be successful in this role. This is a full-time, 10-month (school year) position. Hours are Monday through Friday 7:45 am - 4:00 pm.Position Summary:
  • Under the general supervision of the Education Coordinator, this position functions as a Teacher and will be responsible for teaching students with one or more disability areas (Emotional Behavior Disability; Specific Learning Disability; Speech & Language; Intellectual Disability; Autism; & Other Health Impairments).
  • The Program encompasses daily academic instruction in Basic Academic Skills (BAS), Life Skills, & Transition planning, & Career Technical Education/Vocational Readiness - all adapted to the individual needs of each student with disabilities.
  • Management of evaluations, diagnostic testing, design of the students (special education eligibility); Individual Education Program (IEPs), progress monitoring, assessment of evidence-based practices & materials, maintenance of confidential records & transition planning.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Creates a flexible program and a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth for children with and without special needs.
  • Establishes effective rapport with students: motivates students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in accordance with each student's ability.
  • Establishes collaborative relationships with teachers and other staff members.
  • Work involves developing and implementing the Individual Education Program in classroom settings that are compatible with the student's age and developmental level.
  • The teacher is responsible for developing lesson plans, adapting materials and designing activities to assist students develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet their IEP goals.
  • The teacher is responsible for monitoring student's progress and for maintaining records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Implements and includes in lesson plans and opportunities for students to experience a variety of learning techniques and methods that are used with SLD students.
  • Plans and schedules lessons according to the daily schedule and approved curriculum
  • Assures that objective for all lessons, units and projects are demonstrated on lesson plans as well as providing a balanced program for instruction.
  • Develops and implements strategies to meet the needs of each individual student.
  • Modifies and develops curriculum as needed based upon techniques needed for individual learning styles.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students assigned.
  • Uses technologies in the teaching and learning process
  • Assist in the selection of book, equipment, and other instructional materials
  • Assist students with setting goals and identifying, planning for and overcoming potential obstacles.
  • Meets with students individually to advise on all areas related to transition: such as career research and planning; workforce training; job readiness and employment search; college planning and admissions
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area with a particular focus on Cross Categorical
  • Knowledge of the IEP goal and implementation process
  • Skill in program planning, development and implementation and evaluation
  • Skill in the maintenance of accurate records, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals and/or groups as a part of a team
  • Ability to be flexible when working with others in a wide variety of circumstances
  • Ability to independently interpret guidelines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to meet deadlines and schedules
  • Ability to speak, hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels
Job Type: Full-timeExperience:
  • Teaching: 1 year
  • Education:
  • 1) a Bachelor's degree in education from an accredited college or university; OR, 2) a Bachelor's degree with 20 credits in an academic area*. * Note:This does not include Health, Art, or Music.
License:
  • Certification with the Alabama State Department of Education - Licensure and credentials must be obtained upon appointment.
Special Notes:
  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.
  • Pathway will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection.
  • Upon hire, all new Pathway employees are subject to fingerprinting.
  • Pathway will conduct pre-employment drug screens.
  • Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency to employment.
  • Physical and TB test will be required to be completed prior to the first day of employment.
