Description

The Team Kentucky Internship Program was established to bring talented and motivated college students into the world of public service. The program provides meaningful and relevant work experience, professional development activities, and offers interns networking opportunities with other interns across the Commonwealth, all while working alongside state government officials.

The Team Kentucky Internship Program is designed to be a prestigious and competitive program; therefore, interested applicants must complete an online application and be vetted through an interview process. Those selected for the program will perform valuable work in our state agencies.

To be considered for a position in the Team Kentucky Internship Program, candidates must:

* Be enrolled at an accredited Kentucky post-secondary school or other educational institution approved by the Kentucky Personnel Cabinet.

* Be in good standing with the school with at least a 2.5 grade point average at hire.

Preferred skills include:

* Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite

* Strong writing skills

* Effective written and oral communication skills.

About the Office of Claims and Appeals:

The Office of Claims and Appeals (OCA), formerly the Kentucky Claims Commission, was created by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2021 to administer the Crime Victims Compensation Board, the Board of Claims, and the Board of Tax Appeals. In addition, the agency oversees and operates the Sexual Assault Examination Program. Each of OCA's boards performs a unique role within Kentucky state government. The Board of Claims investigates and hears negligence claims by individuals or businesses asserted against state agencies pursuant to a limited waiver of sovereign immunity that allows negligence claims against the state. The Crime Victims Compensation Board hears and adjudicates claims by victims of violent crime for compensation to reimburse losses sustained as a result of the crime. Lastly, the Board of Tax Appeals hears and adjudicates appeals by taxpayers of tax assessment from state or county revenue and taxation agencies.

In a normal day with OCA, you will have the opportunity to work with the agency's attorneys to prepare findings of fact based on evidence submitted in the claim, draw conclusions of law based on research you perform, and review of the agency's statutes. You will work to assist crime victims in compiling documentation and information to pursue their claims for compensation, and review petitions of appeal for the Board of Tax Appeals to ensure appellants have met all prerequisites to file an appeal. Additionally, you will attend public meetings of OCA's three boards, meet and work with the board members, each of whom is appointed by the Governor, and learn the ins and outs of how to conduct open, public meetings.

TKIP participants will receive additional compensation ($1/hour) for each year that they return to the TKIP, after previously completing the program.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

* Be dependable: Ensure that you follow your designated work schedule and meet deadlines. Communicate with your supervisor ahead of time if you are unable to follow your work schedule or if you need further support to meet a deadline.

* Take initiative: Look for ways to go above and beyond in your day-to-day to show your co-workers and supervisor that you are a self-motivated problem solver.

* Be a learner: Seek out new opportunities to learn about your state agency and state government. Ask for feedback on your performance - this will show you are receptive and searching for opportunities to grow. Ask questions if you are unsure how to complete an assigned task.

This program will run from May through July 2025.
