Assists mechanics as needed; responds to road-side incidents as needed. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Shop Assignment Duties
- Follows all shop maintenance requirements and responsibilities.
- Performs inspections on buses and equipment as determined by Preventive Maintenance schedules.
- Performs fluid services and changes as determined by Preventive Maintenance schedules.
- Operates hand/power tools, hydraulic jacks, lifting equipment, and other allied tools using good common safety practices.
- Maintains District equipment in a safe working condition.
- Performs parts installation and mechanical repairs of various diesel, gasoline, LPG, and electrical equipment.
Transportation Shop
- Permorms parts installation and mechanical repairs of various diesel, gasoline, and LPG vehicles.
- Performs minor service and repairs on mobile air conditioning systems utilizing R134A and future refrigerants as required.
- Maintains District bus fleet in a safe working condition.
Other
- Maintains accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
- Operates equipment and vehicles as needed to ensure they are in proper functional order.
Safety
- Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties and maintain a clean work environment, including lifting, climbing, operating tools, and operating equipment and machinery.
- Ensures that shop equipment and tools are in safe operating condition.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports to supervisor any conditions not immediately correctable.

- Knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs, and related information.
- Knowledge of how to conduct pre/post trip inspections.
- Skill in determining if measures and clearances are within specifications.
- Skill in reading and comprehending repair manuals and guidelines on equipment and automotive vehicles, including operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Travel Requirements
- Travels to school district buildings, various destinations throughout the District, and professional meetings, as required.
Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Tools Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding/cutting torch equipment; torque wrench; heavy shop equipment such as jack and lift equipment; manual dexterity sufficient to operate a school bus, conduct pre/post trip inspections; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher; all District vehicles; computer, peripherals and electronic media. (smart phones, note pads, tablets, and so forth) to access work orders and facilitate communication.
- Posture: Prolonged standing and sitting, frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; works in strenuous and uncomfortable positions.
- Motion: Frequent use of body weight and back to obtain leverage and/or lift; moderate walking, climbing; frequent use of hands for fine manipulation, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching, including keyboarding and use of mouse; moderate driving.
- Lifting: Frequent lifting and carrying in excess of 50 pounds.
- Exerting: Frequent exerting up to 50 pounds of force to move objects, and occasional force of up to 100 pounds.

Minimum Required Qualifications
- Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency.
- 1 year vocational/technical training from an accredited institution may substitute for 1 year of experience with approval by FWISD Transportation.
- Certification/License:
- Clear and valid Texas CDL Class B driver's license with (P) passenger and (S) school bus endorsement or ability to obtain license within 90 days from hire date;
- Insurable by the District's insurance carrier;
- Complete a 20-hour certification course for a Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate within 90 days of hire date.
- Experience:
- 1 year in preventive maintenance, minor component overhaul and repair on diesel, gasoline, LPG, and electrical equipment or engines;
- 1 year vocational/technical training from an accredited institution may substitute for 1 year of experience with approval by FWISD Transportation.
- Additional Requirements:
- Employees must provide necessary personal tools to perform assigned duties.
- Must be able to pass annual physical;
- Must be able to complete a recurring Texas School Bus Driver Safety 8-hour course to maintain the CDL license.
INSURABILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL DRIVERS
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
- Driving and accident record:
Valid Texas Department of Public Safety Driver Record Check Type 3A-Certified list of all crashes and violations
- NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
- moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
- failure to provide proof of valid driver's license or proof of insurance;
- equipment violations.
- NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
- NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
- NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
- NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver's license.
- NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
- NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
- NO operating a vehicle without owner's permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
- NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
- NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
- NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.
- Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD's Fleet Insurance Carrier.
