Resumes are not accepted in lieu of application fields. Overview and Minimum Class RequirementsTHIS IS A TEMPORARY NON-CIVIL SERVICE POSITION NOT TO EXCEED 866 WORK HOURS IN THE YEAR. Minimum Class Requirements:Six (6) months of experience performing janitorial/custodial care of offices or buildings. HS/GED or equivalent is preferred. Must pass a background investigation regarding applicant's aptitude, character, and judgment; credit, driving record and criminal history.Licenses, Registration & Certificates: Must have CPR and First Aid Certificate within 6 months.Job SummaryUnder general supervision; performs routine general cleaning of City Administrative offices, provides routine security to buildings and performs related work as required. Essential FunctionsSweeps, mops, strips, waxes and buffs floors, vacuums and shampoos carpeting. Washes windows and walls. Dusts furniture, empties waste receptacles and disposes of waste materials. Cleans and sanitizes toilet facilities and replenishes supplies. Cleans drinking fountains and glass doors. Sets up rooms for meetings; locks and unlocks doors; replaces light bulbs; and provides directions to the general public for specific offices and officials. May perform garbage or snow removal on city property. Requires regular and reliable attendance. Performs other related duties as assigned. Major Worker CharacteristicsMust be able to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing, and to comprehend and execute moderately complex oral and written instructions. Ability to operate commercial cleaning equipment including buffers, shampooers and vacuums. Incumbent must be able to apply commercial cleaning agents to specific cleaning conditions with effective results. Must be able to meet and deal with the public in a concise and courteous manner and to provide directions. Must be able to work alone and secure building facilities when not in use. Must have knowledge and ability to access the internet and perform basic computer functions. Custodians may be exposed to dust, chemicals and detergents. Custodians may be required to work evening shifts. Must adhere to a high level of non-disclosure standards and maintain confidentiality boundaries.Physical Demands: Work is frequently performed inside and occasionally outside. Work involves continuous use of hands to handle, feel or operate machines or controls and reaching with hands and arms. Work frequent bending/twisting at knees/waist/neck while performing related activities. Frequent kneeling/crouching/crawling while working. Occasional heavy work includes lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds. On rare occasions maybe required to lift heavier weight with the assistance of others or mechanical devices up to 50 pounds. Frequently ascends/descends stairs while maintaining balance. Continuous use of all senses including feeling/talking/hearing/seeing while performing duties and while communicating with co-workers, general public and completing all tasks as assigned. May work alone, with others in noisy work areas. Frequent exposure to vibration, mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, pressurized equipment and moving objects. Occasional exposure to dust, dirt, water, unpleasant odors, chemicals, detergents and contaminated blood, materials, needles, high places, gases/vapors, and chemicals. Must be able to distinguish color and maintain long-term and short-term memory. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.Unusual Working Conditions:May be assigned to work evening and/or weekend shifts. Custodians may be exposed to dust, chemicals, and detergents; and may come in contact with hostile people and contaminated blood, materials and needles. The pay range listed for this position is establish through the City of Yakima's Master Pay Ordinance in accordance with the Municipal Code and/or the applicable collective bargaining agreement. New employees generally start at step A with progression through the steps based on merit and successful performance evaluation. City of Yakima employees are paid and accrue benefits on a monthly basis. This position is covered by the AFSCME Municipal collective bargaining unit.
