Statement of Duties/Distinguished Features of the ClassPerform a range of unskilled to semi-skilled manual labor tasks to support citywide solid waste operations. This includes the collection and disposal of refuse, recycled goods, leaves and limbs, white goods, and bulk items. The work is labor-intensive and involves using basic hand tools such as shovels, rakes, and pitchforks. Employees in this role are expected to assist with all aspects of solid waste collection, transport, and disposal. Occasionally, employees may operate non-specialized equipment, including the rear loader lift, compactor, and leaf truck vacuum, or perform other related tasks as needed.
PAY RATE: $20-22/hourEssential Duties and Tasks- Perform various unskilled manual labor tasks to collect and dispose of refuse, recycled goods, white goods, and bulk items citywide.
- Adhere to relevant safety practices in all duties.
- Work on an assigned route with a specific crew to support refuse, recycling, or yard and bulk waste operations.
- Operate equipment such as the rear loader lift, compactor, and leaf truck vacuum.
- Use basic hand tools, including shovels, rakes, and pitchforks.
- Collect and load white goods and bulk items, including curbside overflow.
- Assist with daily inspections of equipment and machinery, including checking tire conditions and pressures, greasing fittings, flippers, and blades, and checking fluid levels.
- Deliver and collect refuse and recycling containers as needed, maintaining records to track container locations.
- Perform minor maintenance on refuse and recycling containers, such as replacing bars, wheels, and lids.
- Wash out all trucks, trailers, and equipment.
- Assist other departments and agencies as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with tools, materials, and methods used in the solid waste industry for collecting and disposing of refuse, recycling, and handling vegetative debris.
- Safety Awareness: Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for operating assigned equipment and performing daily tasks.
- Equipment Maintenance: Knowledge of operational and preventative maintenance requirements for equipment and vehicles used in primary duties.
- Geographic Knowledge: Familiarity with street locations and the geographic layout of the city.
- Equipment Operation: Proficiency in operating equipment used in daily tasks.
- Tool Usage: Skill in using basic hand tools, as well as gas or electric tools, for performing duties.

Physical Requirements/Special RequirementsPHYSICAL DEMANDS:This job involves heavy physical work, requiring the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. WORK ENVIRONMENT:The job involves working both indoors and outdoors, often in extreme weather conditions, ranging from very hot to very cold. Employees will be exposed to various hazards such as loud noises, moving mechanical parts, high traffic areas, and potentially harmful substances like fumes, odors, dust, gases, and oils. The work environment carries significant risks, including potentially dangerous situations and unusual environmental hazards, necessitating a range of safety measures and precautions.Employees must adhere to safe work practices, including proper equipment use, avoiding trips and falls, and following fire regulations and traffic signals. Additionally, wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields is mandatory.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in maintenance work or related job duties.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:- Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License.
