Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications to be appointed at the Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 Level:

A. One year as a Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1;

OR

B. Possession of a Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and six months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles and twelve months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair;

OR

C. A valid Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and eighteen months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications to be appointed at the Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 3 Level:

A. One year as a Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2;

OR

B. Possession of a Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction;

AND

Twelve months of experience in operating construction equipment and vehicles;

AND

C. Eighteen months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.

Minimum Qualifications to be appointed to the Journey-Level Thruway Maintenance Worker:

A. Satisfactory completion of a three year Thruway Maintenance Worker Traineeship;

OR

B. Possession of a New York State Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction;

AND

One year of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles;

AND EITHER

Two years of experience in carpentry, masonry, ironwork, welding, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair;

OR

Training received through completion of a two year technical school course in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair;

OR

Completion of a high school technical course in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair and 12 months of experience in bridge construction or repair.

Duties Description 1. Engages in the maintenance, repair and reconstruction of infrastructure, including pavements, shoulders, parking areas, facilities, toll plazas, medians, right-of-way, bridge decks, retaining walls, piers, fascia, abutments, culverts, water control and other structures and appurtenances.

2. Operates maintenance and construction equipment and vehicles involved in snow and ice control and other activities and uses a two-way radio.

3. Adheres to safety rules, work rules, maintenance procedures and techniques.

4. Reports observed maintenance needs to supervisor and performs spot maintenance, including removal of nuisance objects.

5. Performs traffic control activities.

6. Serves as a team leader and provides direction, guidance, instruction and training to others.

7. Maintains daily records of work performed and materials used.

8. With appropriate certification, may apply herbicides and pesticides, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

This position is eligible for additional annual components of pay which are as follows:

Location Pay: $1.70 per hour

Geographic Pay: $3.37 per hour

This is a NYS Thruway Authority Unit 1 Teamsters position:

Health Insurance and Prescription Drug Coverage.

Dental and Vision Coverage.

13 Paid Holidays, 4 of which are floating holidays, which are credited in July each year for use from July 1st through June 30th.

Vacation, Sick and Personal Accruals.

Sick Leave is credited at the rate of one-half day each biweekly pay period up to a total of 165 days.

Sick Leave Incentive Plan - Employees who have not accumulated 165 sick days and have not used sick leave during the periods of January 1st to June 30th or July 1st to December 31st, each year, may receive two days of pay for each six-month period. Employees who have a sick leave balance of 165 days, and continuously maintain that balance for each six-month period, may receive four days of pay for each six-month period.

Employees with 20+ years of continuous Authority/State service may receive up to an additional five days of vacation leave accruals annually.

Membership in the New York State and Local Retirement System, as well as optional enrollment in the NYS Deferred Compensation Plan.

Tuition Assistance Program which reimburses 90% of tuition costs for approved courses up to 15 credit hours per year.

New York's 529 College Savings Program, which provides New York families with a tax-advantaged way to save for college.

Flexible Spending Program, which allows employees to set aside pre-tax payroll deductions for eligible health care and dependent care expenses.

Service Award Payments - Upon completion of 10 years of Authority service, eligible employees will receive a 10-year Service Award Payment. Payments are then awarded every five years as noted in the contract until 30 years of Authority service is reached. Service Awards have a positive impact on retirement.

Employees are paid bi-weekly, with no lag time.

Some positions will be eligible for downstate and/or geographical pay depending on location and title.
