About the roleActively maintains and improves knowledge of tool design, machines, engineering standards, procedures, new technology (materials, hydraulic and/or pneumatic clamping) through personal training and education. Provides consultation on DFM, preliminary and formal costing. Work primarily on fixtures for assembly, stamping dies, work holding, special tools used in machining and assembly. Develop and implement cost reduction programs consistent with Lean Manufacturing principals. Lead or participate in cross functional project teams designed to introduce new products, improve existing tooling, better our tooling manufacturing process and /or design, advance our competitive advantage in the marketplace. Determine practical approach to determining tolerance as it relates to manufacturing and die construction. Provide estimate for the number of hours to design, process, and manufacture and inspect tooling components to support all facets of final product delivery. Evaluate what equipment and process will be needed to complete the work. Uses computerized design and computer aided engineering tools to perform job requirements. Has a good knowledge of various materials (tools, steels). Work with vendors to order materials for tools.Compensation: $35-$45What you will be doing
  • Design production tooling and offer design input to Product Designers to add a manufacturing perspective to new tooling programs.
  • Accurately quote the cost and lead-times of new tooling projects.
  • Follow through complete projects from concept design, build and try-out for projects done in-house or through outside vendors.
  • Maintain cost and delivery requirements for all new tooling assignments.
  • Oversee design of tooling incorporating engineering changes, as needed, as well as completing design review and approval process.
  • Document project specifics between Southco and tooling vendors, including archival of CAD data.
  • Keep current with industry trends to help Southco improve tooling programs, reduce lead-times and control costs.
About you
  • Minimum of two year Technical Degree or equivalency
  • Five to ten years Tool & Die Shop and/or Design experience
  • Knowledge of metrics, trigonometry and geometry
  • Able to select most tooling materials
  • Ability to interact with other departments on a design level
  • Computer literacy a must, with 3-5 years CAD experience and ability to use CAD system to perform design and design revision. Must have knowledge of work processing and business system.
