Job Summary: At a basic level, analyzes specifications, lays out raw materials, sets up and operates manual and conversational CNC machine tools, develops, manufactures, fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair prototype and production dies and hand tools, jigs, fixtures and gauges. Uses various machines capable of turning, milling, boring and grinding. Performs assignments that range from the use of ordinary tool room operations to work involving accurate relationships and extremely close tolerances. Primary Responsibilities: 1. Reads and follows specifications such as engineering drawings, sketches, models, or work instructions, visualizes parts and assemblies to determine materials and processes required and machines to be used to manufacture parts. 2. Calculates dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations. 3. Sets up and operates manual machine tools such as lathes and mills to machine parts. 4. Sets up, programs and operates conversational CNC mills and lathes to machine parts. 5. Sets up and operates surface grinders to control size, location, form and/or fit of components. 6. Verifies dimensions, alignments and clearances utilizing various precision measuring devices to ensure compliance to specifications. 7. Heat treats tools or parts and tests to confirm hardness. 8. Provides assistance to tool designer on new tooling to be used or modifications to improve existing designs. 9. Cleans work area, tools, and equipment. 10. Adheres to safety practices and procedures. 11. Follows procedures as defined by Fike policies, procedures and ISO9001 requirements. Performs related duties as assigned. Regular and consistent attendance is required. Essential Skills: Subject Matter Understanding. Computer Literate. Inspecting/Examining Ability. Mechanical Dexterity. Machining Aptitude. Housekeeping. Troubleshooting. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; use hand to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds using appropriate moving devices. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently exposed to guarded moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Job Qualifications: REQUIRED: High School Diploma or General Educational Development Diploma (GED). Two years or more of machine shop experience with exposure to and knowledge of Tool and Die disciplines, or training certificate from a community college, or experience working as an apprentice Tool & Die Maker. Working knowledge of the principles of blanking, piercing or forming in several separate progressive stages. Knowledge in reading, interpreting and following machine instructions, work orders and engineered drawings.
