DIRECT HIRE

LOCATION: Bluffton, IN

PAY: Up to $31/hour

SHIFT: 3:30PM-2:00AM, Monday-Thursday. Occasional half-days on Friday for OT

Tool and Die Maker

Summary: The Tool and Die Maker is responsible for all repair activities as assigned by the Tooling Manager or Tooling Shift Leader. This role involves building or repairing dies, fixtures, and gauges using drawings or prints, and running all tool-room equipment. The position also includes troubleshooting sheet metal dies, maintaining a clean and safe work area, and complying with all safety and quality policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build or repair any die, fixture, or gauge using a drawing or print.
  • Run all tool-room equipment including mills, lathes, grinders, surface grinders, saws, drill presses, and Mig/Tig welders.
  • Troubleshoot sheet metal dies in presses and the tool room.
  • Use layout tools and equipment such as height gauges, Jo-Blocks, indicators, micrometers, and calipers.
  • Clean up assigned work areas including work benches.
  • Complete all documents such as job cards, p.m. logbooks, etc.
  • Operate cranes for trucks and lift trucks to move dies.
  • Inform Inspection at the end of each shift or job about any excess parts or raw material for proper disposal.
  • Observe and comply with all company, federal, and state safety and environmental policies and practices.
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of all relevant quality policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe personal work area and shared facility space.
  • Stop production if safety is jeopardized or to correct quality problems, reporting immediately to the production shift supervisor and Quality Manager.
  • Design and build fixtures and small dies.
  • Teach and instruct lower-class toolmakers and apprentices in techniques and equipment operation.
  • Train and manage apprentices.
  • Tryout dies and assist in securing PPAP approval.
  • TIG weld trim steels and heat treat tool steels if necessary.
  • Estimate and quote hours and costs.
  • Inventory punches and other expendables.
  • Layout dies, fixtures, and parts.

Basic Requirements and Skills:

  • Good eyesight and health to permit full-time employment and attendance within company guidelines.
  • Ability to manipulate up to 90 lbs.
  • Ability to place or position parts on surface plates or other inspection equipment.
  • Ability to manipulate small parts for sorting and inspection.
  • Must meet required standards for quality and quantity of work.
  • Able to do general cleaning and housekeeping tasks to keep the work area clean.
  • Ability to learn and use micrometers, calipers, profilometers, height gauges, dial indicators, gauge blocks, and other equipment.
  • Ability to learn English and metric measuring systems and convert between them.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must follow all safety requirements and understand Safety Data Sheet requirements.
  • Accurately complete all required documents.
  • Properly care for all company property and tools issued.
  • Ability to lift, bend, twist, walk, and climb as required to perform the job.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  • Must have own die maker's tools.
  • Must have good troubleshooting abilities.
  • Must have a certificate or proof of seven (7) years working in the tool and die trade or a Journeyman Tool and Die Card.
  • Must be able to build or repair any die, fixture, or gauge using a drawing or print.
  • Aid supervisor in identifying training needs and attend all scheduled training and education programs.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 4-year apprenticeship with a minimum of 576 classroom hours.
  • Employees must be able to verbally explain company Quality Policy and ISO Quality Management Systems.
