Required Qualifications: As per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four (4) years full time experience under a skilled journeyman carpenter, which provides training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis. The Trades Generalist performs journey level work in Carpentry and semi-skilled level work in Painting. Candidate must be able to perform the physical tasks of position such as bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to supervise and train assigned subordinate personnel. Secondary trade is Painting.

Brief Description of Duties: The Trades Generalist performs journeyman Carpentry work including building, repairing and installing such items as counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, window framework and trim, as well as painting as the secondary trade. Successful incumbent must follow verbal or written instructions and resolve most job-related problems as they arise. Incumbent will perform the physical tasks required of a tradesperson, such as bending, lifting, stretching, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and being able to work in small areas. May be asked to respond to emergencies. Incumbent must also have a working knowledge of math used for the craft trades.

* Prioritize, plan and lay out work for new installations and alterations to existing items consistent with specification, building code, and blue prints and plans. Such items would include walls, partitions, floors, doors, window framework and trim, counters, cabinets and benches.

* Plan, layout, and complete varied carpentry work. Install and repair ceiling and floor tiles. Install, maintain and repair doors, door hardware, windows, window hardware, fixtures and equipment. Inspect work performed to ensure the quality of work is satisfactory. Resolve most job-related problems that may arise.

* Use and maintain tools, machines, equipment and materials used in the carpentry and painting trade. Work with a variety of materials in addition to wood, sheet metal, wallboard, plastics, aluminum, paint, paint remove, wire brushed, and chipping tools.

* Plan, layout and complete varied painting work. Prepare surfaces for painting by such methods as washing surfaces, use of paint remover, wire brushes, or chipping tools to remove all paint and by sanding surfaces to smooth them. Mix paint or use pre-mixed paint. Inspect work performed to ensure the quality of work is satisfactory. Resolve most job-related problems that may arise. Install and repair cove base.

* Conduct inspections for the assigned areas to determine maintenance needs and recommend priorities for repair based on the maintenance problems.

* Estimate materials and labor required to complete a project. Plan new installations alteration to existing installations and major repairs consistent with specifications codes.

* Implement and enforce safety procedures and standards.

* Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes: These are full-time positions, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 12 Hiring Rate $48,956, Job Rate $59,757. This position includes location pay of $3,400, annually.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Seniority for promotion is the length of service in the Operational Services Bargaining Unit. Seniority applies to vacant non-competitive class positions in salary grades higher than the applicants grade. Applicants must meet the posted qualifications/job requirements, legitimate operating needs of the department and have the ability to perform duties and responsibilities satisfactorily.
