Job Summary:
Performs journeyman plumbing/steam fitting work and frequently supervises others in the installation, alteration and repair of kitchen and patient care equipment, medical gas systems, pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, heating control, domestic water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes. Performs semi-skilled welding works on a variety of metals including steel, iron, brass and aluminum using electric arc and gas welding equipment to maintain and repair metal equipment parts and assemblies. Performs semi-skilled HVAC work such as steam and hydronic systems chilled water systems and unit heaters. Must demonstrate working knowledge of theory practice, techniques, applicable standards and tools, materials and equipment used in the primary and assigned trades. Patients, guests, visitors, and all other customers within University Hospital and associated buildings use these systems. Must have working knowledge of applicable plumbing code regulations, mathematics of plumbing, welding and HVAC trades, ability to read, interpret and work from plans, drawings and specifications; working knowledge of hot water and steam heating systems and control devices; ability to perform moderately heavy lifting, stoop, bend, stretch and stand for long periods of time. Position may require the use of a respirator to comply with State & Federal Safety Health Codes. Reassignment offers are contingent upon satisfactory evaluation from the Employee Health Office. Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver's license.
Minimum Qualifications:
Four years of full time experience in the plumbing trade under a skilled journeyman which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in the plumbing trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis. Must possess two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work in related trades (see operational needs for reference) under the supervision of a skilled tradesman or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course. Must possess a valid New York State driver's license.
