SUNY Delhi seeks a dynamic, forward-thinking Trades Specialist Plumber & Steamfitter to join the Facilities Department in the Plumbing Shop. This facilities Plumbing Shop position is responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing related work in all campus buildings including six residence halls, as well as, exterior underground piping systems. This position will perform journey-level plumbing work including installation, alteration, and repair of pipes, fittings, fixtures, equipment, and drainage systems in accordance to specifications, and NY State Plumbing Code. The Plumbing Shop is responsible for distribution systems for water, septic, and storm water. This position will supervise others in area of plumbing.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

+ Repairs, maintains, and installs plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, shower baths, toilets, drinking fountains, dishwashers, valves including pneumatic controls, gas and water meters, gas hot water heaters, and other gas appliances, various steam equipment used in kitchens and food service, water pumps, and hydrotherapy equipment.

+ Assess malfunction or breakdown of equipment, working with end user to resolve issues, using testing equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauge to assist with troubleshooting.

+ Follow technical manuals, codes, diagrams, and previous experience to plan new work or repairs to existing equipment.

+ Reviews building plans and working drawings to determine work, and sequence of installation, locating and identifying pipes, connections and passages holes, as well as, cutting openings in floors and walls to accommodate pipes and fittings.

+ Plans and lays out the installation, alteration, and repair of high- and low-pressure pipe systems that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases consistent with specifications, plans, and plumbing codes.

+ Makes necessary repairs or adjustments or directs others in performing such activities.

+ Measure, cut, bend, and assemble pipes and fittings (metal and non-metal).

+ Join piping by means of threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints.

+ Tests pipe system for leaks by filling with liquid or air and reading pressure gauges.

+ Replace existing fixtures in bathrooms, labs, and work areas. Clean drains, traps, sewage, and storm sewer lines.

+ Maintains and repairs underground water sanitary, and storm sewage lines.

+ Completes information on Work Order (WO) system, prioritizes WO's importance to fit campus need.

+ From blueprints, or specifications may estimate labor, materials, tools, and equipment for assigned work.

+ Use computer to research parts, and materials, obtaining quotes needed for ordering and completion work.

+ Assigns work to Assistant Plumber, giving verbal or demonstrative instructions on proper plumbing techniques, and use of tools and equipment. Inspect work when completed.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

+ Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR,

+ Successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a two-year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

+ Status: Full-time, Permanent

+ Negotiating Unit: 03 - Operational Services Unit (OSU)

+ Salary: $48,956, SG-12

+ Work Schedule: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm, 40 hrs/wk, Monday - Friday. The assignment may be made to include weekend and holiday work to meet the needs of the campus.
