MISSION: It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.JOB PURPOSE:Under limited supervision, manages, plans, develops, conducts, and coordinates staff development and training programs for agency staff with special emphasis for Security and Operations Division, to include the Juvenile Detention Center; Assists in the training of other direct care staff in the agency as needed or required; Assists in conducting needs assessments and serving as part of the leadership team for Training and Certification. Serves on the training advisory council for Training and Certification. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:Directs and manages the daily activities and work assignments of Security and Operations Training Team and Field Training Officers.Leads and onboards new employees- identifying a learning path to ensure training competence and confidence.Evaluates employee performance, provides constructive feedback, and coaches to upskill knowledge and capabilities.Fosters a team culture of team collaboration, communication, engagement, and excellence to achieve team goals and support the mission of the agency.Possesses problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to address team conflict.Designs and executes training programs (Basic, Recertification, and In-Service) to enhance workforce skills, performance, and productivity of correctional officers, security specialists, etc.Creates and develops the Field Training Officer program to improve officer job performance in the facility.Cultivates, develops, and maintains relationship with stakeholders.Identifies and assesses future and current training needs through evaluations, field observations, and consultation with stakeholders.Monitors and evaluates training program's effectiveness to identify and address gaps.Optimizes training processes, procedures, and tools for efficiency.Provides appropriate solutions for concerns and issues that arise.Conducts and facilitates training (Basic, Recertification, and In-service) on an as needed basis.Models and demonstrates effective and engaging training skills for training staff.Provides and delivers training for leadership development as part of a team.Adjusts training delivery styles to meet the needs of participants.Ensures compliance with various standards for testing administration and skill assessments.Works closely with other training managers for the support and development of cross-functional training teams.Maintains and obtains instructor certifications in Nationally recognized and/or accredited training program required to meet agency needs.Plans, develops, and coordinates training schedule and events.Attends to multiple responsibilities simultaneously, effectively manages time to meet deadlines, and handles complex projects efficiently.Provides clear and concise written communication to stakeholders to support decision-making and programming.Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related software.Maintains and keeps abreast of training best practices, knowledge of new methods and techniques for training, and training requirements applicable to the organization.Possesses knowledge of adult learning, facilitation skills, and training delivery.Ensures content is customized and tailored to the correctional setting and research current trends and legislation for correctional staff.Maintains advanced knowledge of agency policies and procedures.Performs other related job duties as needed or required to support the division for the agency. Minimum and Additional RequirementsSTATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:A bachelor's degree and relevant training and development experience.Special Requirement:Successful completion of Detention Basic training at the SC Criminal Justice Academy and DJJ's Training of Trainers within 9-months of hire and other applicable certifications as required. Must successfully complete and maintain instructor certification in agency's selected behavioral management training which includes the primary restraint and take down techniques and on-the-job functions.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:Must be able to effectively supervise staff and collaborate with training team members.Requires the following: Knowledge of the juvenile justice system, training principles and practices; as well as methods and techniques of conducting formal and informal training sessions, especially for adult learners.Ability to lead discussion groups and stimulate participants in the learning process.Ability to analyze training / development needs as well as communicate solutions effectively utilizing critical thinking and resources.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.Works closely with the training managers to plan, deliver and coordinate all trainings for assigned areas. Responsible for supervising programs and related activities in the assigned areas. Includes and consists of physical intervention techniques and on-the-job functions but not limited to: Handcuffing (hands extended behind back), prone positions (flat on stomach and/or back), bending at the waist and torque motions; Lifting hands above the head, repeated breathing (inhaling/exhaling) techniques for First Aid/CPR/AED. Kneel on knees (together and individually) unsupported. Walk and/or stand for extended periods of time, sit in a desk chair for up to eight hours per day at least 5-7 days per week.This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.Routine travel throughout the state possible.Position is not sedentary; employees must be mobile and able to bend, kneel, lift, carry, and demonstrate physical safety interventions applied on youth.Attend training and maintain certification required to meet agency needs. Preferred QualificationsPREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:A bachelor's degree with supervisory experience and six years of experience conducting and/or developing training for corrections, law enforcement or military personnel.
