The New York Transit & Rail group of over 50 professionals is established and growing and works closely across our multi-disciplinary office and with our NJ, CT, MA, and PA offices providing full-service transit and rail services to our clients across the region.

The Transit & Rail Group Director is responsible for the strategic direction and supervision of multiple transit design departments, each led by a department manager. Departments that you will be responsible for include track, train control, communications, traction power, catenary and safety & security. This role requires a combination of technical leadership, business acumen, and marketing/sales.

The Transit & Rail Group director is focused on achieving successful business performance including project delivery, sales and revenue growth, recruiting and retention, and strategic planning. The Transit & Rail Group Director actively engages with our transit clients on current project performance and future opportunities, discovering what our clients value most and collaborates on aligning HNTB to deliver that value. As an active member of the Office Leadership Team, the Transit & Rail Group Director collaborates with leadership across the office and division to apply the firm's strategic sales and planning approaches while assisting with project pursuits and proposals. This position is also responsible for coaching and mentoring staff in managerial and technical topics. The Transit & Rail Group Director will actively participate in industry organizations, building relationships and promoting HNTB.

What You'll Do:

  • Directs and supervises the development and management of the operating budgets for the departments within the Group and coordination with the office's budget.
  • Responsible for the oversight of the group (multiple departments) activities, establish priorities and assign staff to projects. Collaborate with other groups, offices and divisions on work-sharing needs and opportunities.
  • Drives the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits and markets with the Group and office, including development of strategic planning strategies.
  • Drives the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the group.
  • Drives the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.
  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities.
  • Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Leads and assists in sales and marketing efforts for department's growth.
  • Assists in the development and execution of the office strategic plan. May participate of the Office Leadership Team (OLT).
  • Recruits, hires, develops and retains department staff within the group, including supporting Department Managers with the development of plans for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession planning.
  • Manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with 12 years of practical experience including 4 years of supervisory experience.

What We Prefer:

  • 20 years practical experience; preference for New York market experience and relationships with MTA and NJT personnel.
  • 10 years supervisory experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or equivalent professional registration.
  • Technical proficiency in at least one transit discipline.
  • Ability to develop trusted relationships with transit clients.
  • Experience in writing proposals and making presentations.
  • Ability to motivate a team based on trust, vision and shared passion for transit and rail.
  • Demonstrated strong project management skills.

Pay Range: The approximate pay range for New York is $176,192.06 - $351,812.06. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual's qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
