Salary: $1,811.54 - $2,632.70 Biweekly Location : Charleston, WV Job Type: Full-Time Permanent Job Number: DOT25MC022A Division: West Virginia Department of Transportation District/Subdivision: Materials, Control, Soil & Testing Division Opening Date: 02/12/2025 Closing Date: 5/31/2025 11:59 PM Eastern Nature of Work The Transportation Geologist Trainee performs beginner level professional work providing basic geologic services in conjunction with road construction and maintenance projects. Facilitates review activities, primarily pertaining to construction design or impact and environmental preservation. The employee must use independent judgement in the interpretation and adaptation of policies and guidelines. The employee may use precedents or work directions in the application to specific issues or problems. Analysis of subject matter is conducted, and decisions are made using the results of this analysis. Many alternatives may be available, but it is up to the employee to choose the most appropriate alternative. This position will require field work. Performs other related duties as required. Pay Grade 15 Typical Duties and Responsibilities • Installs and monitors various equipment to obtain data on subsurface conditions • Collects, analyzes, and catalogs geologic samples • Studies the location, character, and quantity of geologic deposits • Updates geologic maps and combines historical survey reports from various sources into summaries/composites • Maps water flow, disposition or sediment, and ground absorption for environmental review of the effect of pollution events and/or stability of proposed projects • Assists in reviewing contamination assessment reports and proposals, remediation specifications, remedial action plans, closure plans, and permit applications for appropriate environmental integrity • Participates in resistivity and seismic surveys • Compiles statistical data on the production and value of the State's geologic resources • Collects, verifies, loads, and manipulates geologic data for survey monitoring and mapping • Interprets survey results and prepares findings reports • Established rules, regulations, and procedures will be used to solve a variety of routine problems and answer a variety of standard questions • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required. Required Skills and Knowledge • Knowledge of the fundamental principles of geologic science • Knowledge of geological methods of collection, analysis, and documentation of field data • Skill in the use of survey tools and equipment • Skill in the preparation of geologic maps • Skill in the reading and interpreting of topographic maps • Ability to learn data input and manipulation procedures using computer software packages • Ability to identify and classify rocks, minerals, fluids, soils, and geologic information • Ability to learn acceptable methods, procedures, and approaches to making a complete and satisfactory geologic investigation • Ability to assemble data to prepare technical reports • Ability to maintain records and document findings regarding investigations • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, government officials, industrial representatives, and the public • Ability to communicate with others, both orally and in writing • Ability to walk long distances in adverse weather over rugged terrain • Ability to lift and carry equipment for considerable distances Required Education and Experience REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in geology.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE This is the entry level position for this series, therefore no experience is required.
