Job Title: Med Surg Float Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse (RN) Specialty: Central Registry - Float Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 3pm - 3am Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year Med Surg hospital experience required. Two years is preferred. License: RN license (compact license accepted) Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) required through AHA Must-Have: Med Surg hospital experience Description: General Medical and Surgical units manage a diverse population of patients with varying diagnoses. These include chronic illnesses such as COPD, Diabetes, CHF, and end-stage renal disease. GI issues include pancreatitis, bleeding, gastroparesis, and inflammatory bowel diseases. Infections managed include pneumonia, cellulitis, sepsis, UTI, c-diff, and more. Patients with neurological issues such as stroke, dementia, and traumatic brain injuries are also cared for. There are patients with mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. Patients may undergo procedures such as colonoscopies, thoracentesis, paracentesis, bronchoscopy, and minor surgeries. General job duties include medical-surgical nursing care, assessments, and care planning. Inter-professional communication and utilization of EHR are essential. Management of IV pumps, wound vacs, heat/cooling pads, feeding pumps, and tubes is required. Equipment used includes Epic electronic record, pyxis machines, Accucheck blood glucose, and Hospira IV pumps. Telemetry monitoring and utilization of SCDs for VTE prevention are required. The shift or schedule requires 12-hour shifts with 3 weekend shifts in 4 weeks. Med Surg RNs will float to areas in the greatest need, with patient ratios of 1:5. Dress Code is Caribbean Blue scrubs. RNs may float to other medical units as needed. Supplemental staff go through Jump Start orientation, including 1 day of general hospital orientation. Approximately 5 days of nursing orientation with Epic classes are included.
