The nurse-to-patient ratio during the night shift is 1:6. The unit has 90 double occupancy beds. Common patient diagnoses include pneumonia, COPD, radiation treatments, acute kidney injury, and occasional laparoscopic surgeries. The unit requires heparin and Lasix drips but does not require titration. Charge nurses are available on each shift and may take assignments as needed. Patient care assistants help with patient care, typically serving 8-12 patients per assistant. RT equipment used includes BiPAP and stable tracheostomy care. Dedicated monitor technicians handle telemetry; therefore, travelers do not need to read telemetry. Shifts are from 6:45 PM to 7:15 AM. Weekend shifts are required every other week, with a holiday requirement of typically working two out of three major holidays. Floating to other similar units may be required, including MedSurg, stable low-acuity ICU, and a nearby clinic. The nurse will wear navy blue scrubs. Orientation includes one day of new employee orientation, one day of clinical education with Epic system training, and one day on the unit floor. The scheduling policy allows for cancellation of hours equivalent to the weekly guaranteed hours for the assignment. The charting system used is Epic.
