Summary:
- NICU nurses provide specialized care for critically ill patients with complex medical conditions that require meticulous monitoring.
- Implement and manage the nursing process, which includes patient assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, and evaluation of interventions.
- Reports to the Supervisor of the Unit.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deliver nursing care for critically ill infants in the NICU environment.
- Maintain close observation of all assigned patients and administer prescribed medications and treatments as needed.
- Assist physicians and healthcare teams in patient assessments and treatment procedures, such as wound care and monitor life-support equipment.
- Support and educate the patient's family on caring for their child.
- Provide care for patients on ventilators and perform pulmonary toileting procedures.
- Capable of drawing blood from central and arterial lines and administering medication.
- Perform and interpret EKGs and telemetry monitoring effectively.
- Exhibit proficiency as a member of the Cardiac Arrest Code Team.
- Initiate and modify the patient's care plan based on ongoing assessments.
- Incorporate patient teaching and discharge planning into the overall care plan.
- Integrate clinical and technical care components with nursing actions and adhere to established policies and procedures.
- Document nursing interventions and patient responses in compliance with hospital policies.
- Assess the effectiveness of nursing interventions and modify them as necessary.
- Practice in accordance with the state's Nurse Practice Act and the health care facility's policies.
- Oversee ancillary staff in their job-related duties.
- Ensure patient confidentiality and uphold the rights of patients.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing, with current licensure in good standing.
- Valid AHA BLS and NRP certification required.
- Minimum of one year of recent NICU hospital experience is necessary.
