The Federal Public Defender (FPD) is accepting applications for its Trial Investigator Internship Program. The goal of the program is to provide college students and recent graduates with the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the field of criminal defense by working with investigatorsin the Trial Unit of the FPD. This internship position is unpaid. Exact assignments will depend on the needs of the office and the interns' areas of interest. Skills that interns can expect to learn from this opportunity include:An investigator's role in preparing a federal criminal case for trial.Preparing an investigation plan.Locating and interviewing witnesses.Interview report writing.Methods for obtaining, deciphering, and organizing records and discovery.Using Open Source Intelligence Techniques (OSINT).An investigator's role in developing mitigation.Serving subpoenas.The FPD seeks applicants with an interest in providing passionate, high-quality defense advocacy to indigent individuals. Critical thinking skills and a creative approach to problem solving are essential to the internship. No legal knowledge or investigative experience is required. Interns will not be expected to conduct field work independently. A minimum of 10 hours per week at our Los Angeles office are required. Scheduling is flexible.
