Job Purpose Statement: The primary purpose of an Assistant Coach is to assist in the leadership, including coaching, as well as to perform coaching duties as assigned by the head coach. Assists in establishing an environment in which student/athletes can gain self-esteem and develop a positive self-image; assist in directing the promotion of sportsmanship, a winning attitude and commitment to student academic success.Essential Job Functions:
  • The Assistant Coach assists with leading and supervising organized practice sessions, including setting season goals and objectives.
  • Follows and upholds the policies and mission of the Hood River Valley High School Athletic Program and Hood River County School District.
  • Knowledgeable of league, OSAA and other governing body procedures, regulations and guidelines.
  • Assists with planning, organizing, and directing the Hood River Valley High School Athletic Program in coordination with the head coach.
  • Provides information regarding rules for the seasons (daily doubles, all sports schedule, camp schedules, clinic schedules, etc).
  • Brings new ideas of instruction, athlete accountability and means of creating positive energy.
  • Instructs and demonstrates skills sets and techniques necessary for individual and team development.
  • Works to improve skills and knowledge of each athlete and the team as a whole.
  • Travels with student athletes on the team bus both to and from athletic competitions.
  • Adheres to all financial policies of the District in regard to the collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts. Responsible for purchase order requests for program uniforms, supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures that all coaches (paid and volunteer) working with the Hood River Valley High School Athletic Program are certified and cleared to volunteer before the season begins.
  • Maintains necessary records and completes required paperwork in a specified time and manner.
  • Enforces discipline policies and emphasizes sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles.
  • Supervises students in locker rooms at home and away meets and ensures appropriate behavior.
  • Checks and secures all office, storage rooms, outside doors, locker rooms and all lights after last athlete leaves after meets and practices.
  • Ensures that appropriate rules and regulations regarding the conduct and eligibility of athletic activities and athletes are explained and followed.
  • Maintains a safe environment and facilities for student athletes at all times, conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of student athletes.
  • Ensures that medical and safety requirements are followed.
  • Works directly with school athletic director in reporting injuries, teaching precautions and procedures to ensure staff/student safety and help athletes prevent injuries.
  • Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, parents, fellow coaches, and officials and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  • Appropriately maintains and secures confidential student records and inquiries.
  • Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with students, parents, community, staff and the media.
  • Models good sportsmanship behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards opposing team, fans, parents, officials, spectators and community.
  • Completes and maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required including OSAA Coaches Certification Course.
  • Consults with Athletic Director regarding any off-season training programs, including scheduling dates for summer camps/practices, uniform fittings, parent meetings, etc.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance and is punctual.
  • Responsible for immediately reporting to Law Enforcement or Department of Human Services any instance of suspected child abuse according to (ORS 419B.010)
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and experience in the sport.
  • Ability to establish event plans and review individual and team performance.
  • Ability to collaborate with youth programs, students, parents, the community, staff, and other district coaches.
  • Ability to coach in collaboration with the other coaching staff.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, working well with others from diverse backgrounds; focuses on solving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, listening to others, keeping emotions under control, remaining open to other ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit.
  • Ability to be a positive role model, both on and off the field.
  • Willingness to coach after school, travel, and supervise students.
  • Meet attendance requirements for the position.
  • Possess current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Possess OSAA/State Department of Education Coaching certification (NFHS or ASEP), Steroid and Concussion Training Certifications.
  • Successful fundraising experience.
  • Experience with in-school recruitment of athletes and team building.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous high school coaching experience.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish helpful.
Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
  • Skills possessed will exemplify a moral character that is consistent with being a positive role model for high school students.
  • Knowledge of the sport at the middle school level (to include recent rule changes). Know how to communicate effectively with athletes and parents.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others. To organize and manage students time effectively. To use problem solving strategies consistently. Adjusts to performing practices in a variety of locations.
Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. College Degree Preferred.Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance; district drug screening clearance; physical capacity assessment; BBP Training; NFHS Coaches Certification or ASEP Certifications; First Aid/CPR Certification. Required testing: Any offer of employment made by Hood River County School District to an external candidate is contingent upon satisfactory results of:

The coaching contract will be based on 9.8% of the Licensed Salary Schedule, Column BA, Steps AH.
