Job Description :

The purpose of this position is to locate buried electric, water, and sewer lines, valve boxes, manholes, meter boxes, and meter service lines. This is primarily accomplished by performing individual location markings and maintenance checks as well as preparing reports. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs individual location markings at underground utility sites and then opens valve boxes, meter boxes, backflow prevention devices, pressure release vaults and manholes.
  • Receives and reviews work orders and prioritizes work tickets by geographical location.
  • Performs maintenance checks on equipment and vehicles and restocks vehicles with supplies needed to perform work orders.
  • Prepares a variety of reports and logs including mileage report, cut sheets, material sheets, accident reports, and truck logs.
  • Communicates with contractors and customers to explain service, answer questions, and solve problems.
Supplemental Functions: Performs other similar duties as required. Job Specifications and Qualifications: Knowledge:
  • Applicable tools and equipment of the trade;
  • Distribution line layout principles;
  • Applicable testing equipment;
  • Maintenance and repair principles.
Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License;
  • Ability to obtain CPR Certification. Failure to obtain within six (6) months of hire date may result in termination.
  • Ability to obtain First Aid Certification. Failure to obtain within six (6) months of hire date may result in termination.

  • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting reaching, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
  • Heavy Work: Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 25 -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.
Required Skills
  • Reading maps and plans;
  • Using applicable tools and equipment of the trade;
  • Locating faulted cables;
  • Analyzing underground circuits;
  • Operating a computer and related software applications;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Required Experience High school diploma or equivalency, with at least one year of experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
