POSITION DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Positions assigned to this classification are primarily responsible for entry-level repairs and maintenance of potable and non-potable water production, distribution, transmission, and/or treatment infrastructure.

This is an entry-level position within the Utility Technician series. Each level is distinguished by increasing levels of complexity, customer service, judgment, and responsibility as well as defined technical expertise.

The Utility Technician I position at the City of Tucson's Water Department is an entry level position providing services for the repair and maintenance of potable and non-potable water distribution, transmission, production, and water treatment facility infrastructure, including water mains, services, valves, and fire hydrants, as well as wells, boosters, and reservoirs.

This is an entry level position within the Utility Technician series. Each level is distinguished by increasing levels of complexity, customer service, judgment, and responsibility as well as defined technical expertise.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Water Operations Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Assists with the installation, repair, and replacement of potable and non-potable distribution and transmission system infrastructure, including but not limited to water mains, services, valves, and fire hydrants. Assists with water system flushing and routine water quality monitoring. Responds to emergency calls for service, including water leaks, damaged infrastructure, out of service production or treatment facility equipment and appurtenances. Assists with production, distribution, and treatment facility isolation techniques. Assists with routine corrective maintenance of potable and non-potable production & treatment facility infrastructure, including but not limited to, vertical and centrifugal pumps, flow meters, & hydropneumatic tanks. Assists with well purging and routine water quality monitoring.

* Assists with preventative maintenance tasks such as valve exercising, fire hydrant maintenance, scheduled system flushing and routine water quality monitoring. Assists with the preventative maintenance of potable and non-potable transmission system infrastructure. Assists with water system flushing and routine water quality monitoring. Assists with distribution system isolation techniques. Assists with the preventative maintenance on production site infrastructure including but not limited to, vertical and centrifugal pumps, flow meters, & hydro-pneumatic tanks, compressors as well as routine water quality monitoring. Adheres to scheduled routine maintenance of assets to ensure life cycle of equipment and assets. Assists with purging, super chlorination and de-chlorination of wells, reservoirs, and tanks. Assists with production and treatment plant isolation techniques.

* Reads and enters data in the required system to track work orders and equipment status for work performed, including labor and materials. Enters data into the system to confirm location of assets. Submits Geographical Information System (GIS) change requests when locating, replacing, or installing assets.

* Assists in daily work-site safety and hazard inspections to identify equipment needs for situations involving traffic control, trench shoring, fall protection, confined space entry, and Arizona 811 clearances. Submits requests for required permitting such as right-of-way, Arizona 811, pavement restoration, and noise ordinances. Communicates with system operators on production sites or facilities about work sites and tickets. Assists in following all traffic control procedures prior to starting work at a job site, including cone placement, signage, etc. Ensures all tools and equipment specific to the work order are accounted for and available at the jobsite prior to starting work.

* Provides customer service by communicating through paper notices and phone calls regarding water shut off time frames and expectations. Responds to and helps to resolve customer inquiries.

* Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned. Assists other divisions during emergency operations. Assists in Career Days by engaging in youth outreach.

Work Environment:

Indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment.

High school diploma or G.E.D. and a Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Full Hourly Range: $19.97 - 34.44 USD

This testing process will consist of three components:

* Part I a written exam

* Part II a practical assessment

* Part III an interview

Part I Written Exam: in person exam to take place on January 16th, 2025, at 300 S. Fire Central Place. Expect to spend approximately 1.5 hours for this testing process.

Part II Practical Assessment: Those that pass the written exam will proceed to a practical assessment taking place on January 28, 2025 or January 29, 2025.

Part III Interview: Those that pass the practical assessment will proceed to an in-person interview scheduled for the week of February 3, 2025.

Applicants who pass the practical assessment and the interview will receive a verbal contingent job offer the week of February 9, 2025.
