About the Division

The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).

About the position

This position will be responsible for a wide variety of semi-skilled manual work in support of maintenance; repairs, construction and remodeling work in the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) owned buildings and grounds within Thurston County. The incumbent may work with other trades workers, including but not limited to Carpentry, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Electrical, Paint and Sign, and Grounds to accomplish the work. This position is recognized as a Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP). See the Supplemental Section below for more information.

Some of what you will be doing

Buildings and Grounds Maintenance and Repair

* Under general supervision perform minor maintenance, repairs, cleaning, painting, and construction of buildings, grounds, utility systems, walkways, streets, walkways, parking lots and other paved areas

* Changes filters, assist with fire testing, debris clean up on DES owned properties, sets up visitor service events including barricades and cones and assists with flagging/traffic direction

* Operate hand and power tools and equipment such as skill saws, drill motors, drain cleaning equipment, power washers, and other equipment required to perform building and grounds maintenance, repairs, and construction

* Operate motorized equipment such as trucks, tractors, forklifts, and street cleaning equipment

* Perform power washing of various walkways, sidewalks, and other paved surfaces

* May assist with preventative maintenance tasks, including alarm testing, and exit light testing

* Perform other duties as assigned by supervision and senior DES staff

Administrative Duties

* Accurately prepare and input employee time and attendance records

Required Qualifications

* High school diploma or GED

* Physical strength to perform heavy manual labor including lifting/moving/transporting 50 lbs.

* Must be able to work inside AND outside AND in all types of weather

* Two years of experience as a Utility Worker 1

OR

* Equivalent education/experience

* Must possess a valid driver's license free from serious traffic violation

Preferred/Desired Qualifications

* Ability to read and write in English

* Ability to understand and carry out instructions

* Willing and able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day

Special Requirements

* Forklift, flagger and repertory certification (training can be provided after being hired)

* Possess and maintain a driver's license free from serious violations
