Central Virginia Community College is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. CVCC is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students in occupational/technical programs and university-parallel/college transfer programs.
The goal of the Veteran's Navigator is to serve veteran students as well as a cohort of non-veteran students by providing high touch, high quality involvement through application for admission, financial aid, enrollment, and their academic and/or personal goals. The Veteran's Navigator will support outreach efforts, programs, and services that fulfill the strategic goals of the College's mission and service area.
Serves as primary point of contact to for transition and support services for prospective and current military affiliated students. Helps student determine college readiness, guides students into a college curriculum, and determines, with the student, the most appropriate course of study. Works closely with the academic divisions, faculty and other student services personnel to respond effectively to students' needs, to intervene in matters relative to the curriculum determinations and changes. Refers students to appropriate college personnel and/or community social service agencies when needed. Promotes the college before internal and external constituencies to assist in building enrollment. Supports the strategic goal of improving student retention and achievement of educational goals through exemplary student services, expansive programs and quality instruction. Remains current on veterans' affairs, DoD TA program, and VA GI Bill. Assist veteran/military students on academic probation in developing and implementing tools to succeed academically. Conduct college-wide outreach to promote veteran/military connected student engagement and retention.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Education, training and/or experience in counseling or academic advising. Ability to use Microsoft Office. Experience providing services to a diverse population. Experience that exhibits strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks in a stressful environment. Experience in a helping profession.
Additional Considerations
Master's degree and honorably discharged Veteran.
Experience advising students in a higher education setting.
Experience with PeopleSoft or similar student information system.
