This position is located in San Francisco, CA in the Mission District. Parking is available!
Fund mission based organization is seeking a passionate candidate who is interested in assisting cover for a maternity leave.
Must be interested in working around animals!
Pay is $40/hr
Hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 8am-5pm
Essential Duties and Functions:
Program Development and Administration
- In collaboration with the Volunteer Engagement team, develop annual programmatic goals and identify required steps and timeline toward achieving those goals.
- Recognize opportunities to increase life-saving capacity and create initiatives to meet that potential
- Work cross-departmentally to streamline processes, improve efficiency, decrease LOS, enhance animal health, care and behavioral training, and increase adoption numbers
- Oversee Programmatic budget and monitor monthly expenditures
- Collect, document, analyze, and report statistical data pertaining to the Foster and Shelter Medicine Volunteer programs goals
- Expand Volunteer Mentor program and coordinate animals for cuddle events with Development staff
Volunteer Leadership and Management
- Manage volunteer recruitment and retention strategies for the Foster and Shelter Medicine volunteer programs, maintaining an optimal number of volunteers for each program.
- Maintain volunteer training curriculum and materials that are accurate, engaging, and in alignment with current Shelter Medicine and adoption protocols.
- Recognize and celebrate volunteer contributions and accomplishments through a variety of means including verbal and written communication, tokens of appreciation as appropriate, and annual events
- Develop neighborhood buddy or cohort initiative to promote peer support and retention
- Provide disciplinary action and/or dismissal from volunteer service when appropriate
- Provide regular shelter volunteer satisfaction feedback opportunities and ongoing shelter program evaluation
- Ensure volunteers receive consistent communication and information on Program and SF SPCA related issues and activities, organizational practices and procedures via Volunteer newsletters, Volunteer Facebook pages, and general email notifications.
- Provide oversight for the ongoing update and development of volunteer training curriculums, ensuring material is in alignment with current shelter philosophy, protocol and practice
- Help conduct volunteer information sessions when Volunteer Engagement Director is not available
- Build relationships with current and new volunteers
Staff Development
- Provide direction, coaching, and support to the Foster and Shelter Medicine Volunteer Coordinators; promoting a strong commitment to teamwork, high professional standards, and continuing development
- Conduct regular team meetings to enhance collaboration, innovation, problem solving, and communication.
- Cultivate, mentor and supervise Foster Coordinators to increase job satisfaction and meet program goals
- Keep staff informed of program and organizational changes, SF SPCA policies and successes
- Participate in staff meetings and rounds to stay informed of population needs, protocol changes and any other factors that affect foster animals or Foster Volunteers
- Promote a strong commitment to teamwork, skill building and organizational excellence among your team and volunteers
- Keep staff informed on Society announcements, policies, and protocols
Behavior and Training Development
- Provide behavior resources to the Foster and Shelter Medicine volunteers in partnership with the Shelter Behavior staff
Open Communication
- Facilitate and participate in open, direct communication throughout the Society
- Embrace and promote the Society's direct communication policy
Client Service
- Cultivate positive client, volunteer, and coworker relations while actively promoting our mission, services, programs and events
- Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals
- Promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate
Safety
- Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines, including PPE, and modeling safe work practices
- Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
- Maintain a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follow all pest and rodent control protocols.
- Participate in keeping the SF SPCA campus clean and well maintained.

- Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Work is performed in shared office, with regular exposure to the animal kennels/shelter/veterinary settings
- Regularly sits at computer stations and operates electronic equipment
- Requires ability to speak clearly and loudly to groups inside, outside, and in small and large spaces
- Occasionally lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds when moving supplies and managing special events
- Typically stands, bends, stoops and crouches while working special events
- Regularly moves about the campus to coordinate work
- Regular driving to speaking or meeting locations
- Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel area.
- Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament
- Consistently exposed to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available
- Tetanus and rabies (pre-exposure) inoculations are required or must be waived
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree. Master's Degree preferred
- Minimum 4 years experience in program development and management with an emphasis on working with volunteers
- Three years supervisory experience
- Pervious experience as a volunteer and with supervising volunteers
- Valid California Driver's License and insurable driving record.
- Available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as needed
