Salary : $70,345.60 - $90,396.80 AnnuallyLocation : Ocean City, MDJob Type: Full-TimeJob Number: 202100240Department: Public Works - Wastewater DepartmentOpening Date: 12/04/2024Job Summary Supervises the operations in the technical fields of chemistry and microbiology performed inthe Wastewater Laboratory.Job Duties•Using US EPA approved methods supervise/conduct analysis of wastewater samples for parameters required by NPDES permits. These may vary depending on the class and size of each individual treatment facility.•Advise superintendents of the facilities whenever a violation occurs; furnish them with results of all analysis, and prepare and submit monthly reports to appropriate authorities in a timely fashion.•Supervise/analyze public drinking water supplies for bacteriological parameters as per state regulations using approved standard methods.•Supervise/analyze private water wells as required where the local health department authorities are not in conflict.•Supervise, train and evaluate analytical performance of Lab Technicians I and II.•Schedule personnel to cover seven day a week laboratory staffing needs.•Supervise and schedule the daily, weekly, monthly and annual collections of water and wastewater samples from all client facilities.•Work in cooperation with Worcester County Health Department, University of Maryland and Maryland Department of Environment in collaborative chemical and bacteriological studies.•Update and/or upgrade analytical instrumentation and laboratory methods as required by State/EPA regulations.•Record and maintain in house quality assurance records as per these regulations, using outside assistance contracts where necessary.•Responsible for overseeing safety and security of laboratory facilities including maintaining current knowledge of all relevant protocols, regulations, standards and safety procedures as well as developing and maintaining standard operating procedures.•Oversees inventory management such as selecting, purchasing, storing, and allocating lab equipment, supplies, and data analysis tools.•Responsible for laboratory equipment, supplies, and data analysis tools including inspecting, maintaining, and/or troubleshooting. Performs and documents routine quality assurance and preventative maintenance.•Manages financial activities and/or reports pertaining to the laboratory; assists in preparation of budget estimates.•This position is considered essential personnel and must report even during storm events and other town emergencies.Minimum Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS - To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in chemistry, biology, or a related field, such as, environmental science, or microbiology, and at least five years' experience in an environmental laboratory.LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.Supplemental Information CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Maintain Water Quality Laboratory Supervisor certification status with the State of Maryland. To achieve acceptable results on annual performance evaluation samples from the USEPA, individual must be certified to perform analysis of drinking water.
