- Tap pipelines and install and repair valves, hydrants, meters, and pipes of all sizes which may or may not be under pressure.
- Measure, cut, thread, and fit pipes.
- Locate leaks and make repairs.
- Install, clean, and repair sewer lines, storm drains, and laterals.
- Clean and rod sewer lines.
- Install forms and pour and finish concrete.
- Operate motorized equipment including backhoe and loader.
- Operate trucks and other light power-driven and vibrating hand tools and equipment, including but not limited to jackhammers and whackers.
- Keep tools in clean and safe working condition.
- Maintain water and sewer operational records and charts.
- Take night, weekend, and holiday standby duty on rotational basis with other Department employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
- Materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in water and sewer system installation and repair.
- Meters, valves, fittings, taps.
- Operation of a variety of public works power driven equipment.
- Safe work practices.
Ability to:
- Perform a wide variety of skilled tasks in the installation, repair, and cleaning of sewer and water systems.
- Operate motorized equipment including backhoe and loader.
- Perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 94 pounds.
- Operate trucks and other light power-driven and vibrating hand tools and equipment, including but not limited to jackhammers and whackers.
- Work in trenches with mud and water as a result of broken water mains.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Tolerate changes in outside temperatures from winter to summer and tolerate dust, pollen, wind, and rain, with proper protection.
- Work in confined areas, such as in manholes, deep trenches and tight holes.
- Stand for periods of up to four hours at a time.
- Walk on uneven or steep terrain.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Work various shifts and flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Experience:One year of experience in water and sewer installation, maintenance, and repair, or related experience that would indicate possession of the above qualifications.Education:Equivalent to high school graduation, in addition to any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to qualify for this position.Necessary Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Class A California Driver's License or be capable of obtaining within six months of hire. (This position is subject to the United States Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration regulations related to controlled substance and alcohol use and testing.)
- State of California Water Distribution D-2 Certificate within one year from date of hire.
Residency Requirement:All Water and Sewer employees shall, within six months of hire, establish residency within a 30-minute notification to respond zone.
