DescriptionOCWA - Central New York's Water Authority is currently seeking candidates for a Water Meter Repair Worker I Affairs to join the Meter Repair Team.The work involves responsibility for performing semi-skilled mechanical work in the installation, testing and repair of residential water meters. Standard hand and power tools are used in the work. The employee must apply prior experience with small mechanism repair to function in this class. Assignments are received verbally or in writing from the supervisor with completed work reviewed through equipment performance and review of forms indicating work performed and time charged or may be reviewed in progress, on site, by the supervisor, through observation. This class differs from that of the Water Meter Repair Worker II in that the assignments cover the installation and repair of residential meters, rather than the more complex industrial water metering devices. Supervision is not a function of this class. Does related work as required. Civil Service Job #65180Typical Work Activities Installs new water meters in residences which involves the cutting and threading of pipes, connecting meter coupling, performing a pressure test of the meter on line, and installing and connecting wires in receptacle on the residential exterior.Removes meters by disconnecting couplings from meter, turning off the valve and cap, and installing meter bypass if necessary.Uses standard tools and special testing material to repair and test meters at their location.Performs pressure complaint tests involving disconnecting meter, inserting testing device and taking and recording readings.May maintain records on services performed and/or meters connected/ replaced.May estimate costs and extent of repairs on meters to determine the cost effectiveness of replacement or repair.May read meters when required.RequirementsPosition is Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pmFULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICSGood knowledge of the operation, maintenance and testing of water meters and their internal mechanisms.Good knowledge of the methods/tools used in the repair of small mechanism.Skill in the use of standard tools of the trade.Skill in mechanical repairs.Mechanical aptitude.Ability to read meters, use measuring devices and test equipment.Ability to maintain records.Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSA. Six (6) months of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the repair of water distribution and related mechanical equipment, such as motors, pumps or related mechanisms, such as valves, curb boxes and/or service lines; or,B. One (1) year of permanent work experience for the City of Syracuse or the Onondaga County Water Authority as a Meter Reader I.SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTWhen required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriateendorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
