Reports to: Water / Wastewater Assistant Superintendent

Job Summary:Under general supervision, is responsible for performing numerous duties relating to the operation of the drinking water system. Responsibilities include collecting daily water samples, performing daily analysis of water, maintaining accurate records, performing preventive maintenance on water towers and stations, etc.
Description: - Collects daily water samples for lab analysis, ensures that daily analysis complies with EPA and EPD compliance, and ensures that the chlorine level contained in the water samples is within limits established by law.
- Maintains accurate daily records, including pumping time, chemicals utilized, chlorination levels, auxiliary power utilized, water pressure in the system and wellheads, elevated tank level, exercise high service pumps and wells, etc.
- Maintain 1.1 million gallons of elevated water and maintain the system at good quality levels.
- Assists in repairing leaks in main water lines from ¾ to 16 wide.
- Responds to emergency calls and work to resolve the problem promptly.
- Reads water meters monthly, performs preventive maintenance on water towers and stations, and completes a final water tower check at the end of each day.
- Operates tapping machine for new and used water lines.
- Install new water meters and replace old water lines and valves as necessary.
- Assists in laying pipes for water and sewer lines; operates various equipmenta backhoe and trencher.
- Reads blueprints and charts of the water system to remain better able to determine the cause of any problem which may arise.
- Safely performs all designated job duties to prevent the likelihood of injury to self, other employees, or guests.
- Promotes and participates in cross-training between water and wastewater plants.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: - A high school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum one year of experience as a water operator with knowledge of math and chemistry preferred (or related); or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
- Must possess a Class III Water Operator certification or obtain a Class III Water Operator certification within one (1) year of employment.
- Ability to work well within a team.
- Rotating weekends and on-call schedule required.
- Regular and predictable punctuality and attendance is required.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Successful completion of background check.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: - Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up-to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- More than 50% of the typical workday may be spent walking, sitting, and standing.
- Between 25% and 50% of the typical workday may be spent climbing stairs, pushing, and pulling.
- Less than 25% of the typical day is spent balancing, stooping and/or crouching, kneeling, reaching, sitting, and repetitive wrists, hands, or finger motions.
- Sensory abilities required are feeling, grasping, and touching, with more than 50% of the time spent talking and hearing.
- Visual abilities to perform tasks required are to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment and determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned or make general observations of facilities or structures.
- Required to perform work in outdoor environmental conditions. Exposure to extreme heat, high humidity, occasionally adverse weather conditions, and occasional extreme cold.
- Will be exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts and moving vehicles.
- Will be subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, oils, odors, dust, mists, or poor ventilation.
- Will be subject to close quarters, such as narrow aisles or passageways/hallways.
- Noise levels are considered normal to loud, requiring workers to shout.
