AnnuallyYou can learn more about the benefits that the City of Greensboro offers by visitingWork Schedule:Nightshift ( 6:45pm -7:00am ) 12.25hrs shifts/ 40hrs per week Primary Duties/Brief Description of Work:The Water Plant Operator Trainee performs responsible skilled work in the operation of a water treatment plant and related equipment; does work as required. Work is performed under certified operator.The Water Plant Operator must exercise independent judgement for routine and non-routine operation of a modern 30 MGD or 24 MGD surface water treatment plant for production and distribution of drinking water that meets or exceeds the parameters of regulatory agencies, following established plant operational procedures. Duties include but are not limited to: performance of quality control testing procedures; measuring and adjusting chemical feed rates; operating and monitoring large electric pumps from 1000 to 2500 HP; operating filtration units; monitoring consumer water usage and adjusting distribution system control equipment accordingly to maintain necessary tank levels while meeting the demand. This employee will maintain chemical inventories, plant operation reports, and assist with minor mechanical work and routine equipment maintenance. The Water Plant Operator must have mechanical aptitude and good communication skills. The physical duties include: walking, lifting up to 50 lbs., reaching, climbing, and sitting for long periods of time. The position will work scheduled weekends and holidays and be on-call at least every 4th week, to be assigned. The position requires a State C Surface Water Operator Certification within 18 months of hire date in order to remain in position.The job is NON-EXEMPT under FLSA. QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma/GED
• Valid Driver's License
• State C Surface Water Operator Certification ( or the ability to obtain within 18 months)
• 1+ years of operational Surface Water Treatment plant experience
  • OR an equivalent Surface Water Treatment plant trainee/apprentice with 0 years of direct work experience.
• Experience with Microsoft Office software

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with rotating shifts
• Familiarity with SCADA as an operational process tool
• College-level coursework in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Hydrology, Water & Wastewater Engineering, or related coursework
• Previous Water Treatment operational experience
• 3 years of operational experience in a Water Treatment Plant.
