The City of Plano is seeking a Water Quality Technician to join our team. This role is critical in maintaining the city's water quality standards and compliance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Key responsibilities include collecting and testing water samples, flushing water mains, maintaining comprehensive water quality records, and ensuring adherence to the TCEQ's monitoring plan. Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Water Quality Technician is responsible for collecting, sampling, and testing all water samples required to maintain a safe potable water supply for human consumption and for maintaining all records required regarding water quality.
Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

* Collects water samples from locations at times required for testing; ensures appropriate procedures are followed to avoid sample contamination or other issues which may affect accurate test results.
* Flushes water mains to ensure water quality throughout the distribution system.
* Performs required water sample testing using hazardous materials; records testing results.
* Develops and maintains a database and records relating to water quality including spreadsheets, files, maps, and other to record dates, locations, test results, etc.
* Monitors, updates, and ensures currency of the water quality monitoring plan required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
* Provides monthly, quarterly, annual, and tri-annual required samples and data to the TCEQ as required.
* Orders, maintains, uses, and safely stores all chemicals and/or hazardous materials required for water quality testing.
* Calibrates and maintains all testing equipment; completes repairs as required.
* May lead the work activities of other employees.
* Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
Marginal Duties:
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Decisions: The incumbent must determine appropriate and safe practices and methods for obtaining required water samples. The incumbent must determine whether safe work practices are followed using and storing hazardous chemicals and materials. The incumbent must read and interpret results obtain from lab equipment and must identify and report abnormal results obtained in water quality testing. The incumbent must determine whether sufficient testing supplies are available. The incumbent must determine whether testing equipment requires repair or replacement. The incumbent must work effectively without direct supervision.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of: Procedures and practices of collecting and performing various water sampling techniques using hazardous materials; all applicable State and Federal regulations regarding water quality sampling and testing, and the use and storage of hazardous materials.
Skill in: Reading and interpreting data provided by lab equipment; creating and maintaining data in a database; extracting data required and preparing; completing mathematical calculations; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: Two (2) years of water sampling experience.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements
Licenses and Certifications: State of Texas Class C driver's license. Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Water Distribution Operator Grade C License.
Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to work in the field including traversing uneven terrain, to operate a motor vehicle, and tools and equipment, and to visit various City sites; vision to inspect assigned facilities, to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking conducting inspections to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, to operate standard office equipment, conduct tests, and to operate tools and equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
Employees partly work in the office and partly in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, road hazards, mechanical electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
