MTA Metro-North Railroad strives to provide a safe and reliable commute, excellent customer service and rewarding opportunities to its employees.ResponsibilitiesGCT Wiremen install, inspect, test, maintain and repair all phases of electrical work in Grand Central Terminal, yard areas, and other assigned locations.THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Assemble, install, test, maintain, modify and repair wiring, lighting, motors and associated electric controls, security and fire alarm systems, fixtures, appliances, devices, electrical signs, conduit installation, etc. and electrical wiring for light, heat, and power.
- Install, maintain, and repair all lighting and associated components on GCT structures, in crawl spaces and attics, and in yard locations.
- Ground metal objects (e.g., metal seats, hand rails, digital signs, ATM machines, and ticket machines, etc.) onto train platforms through exothermic welding to ensure safety.
- Inspect, install, repair, and maintain lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), unit breakers, and electrical panels.
- Bend conduit, pipes or tubing ranging from ½ to 5 in diameter and install in various locations (e.g., inside partitions, walls or other concealed or exposed areas).
- Use manual and mechanical wire pullers to pull insulated wires/cables through conduit to complete the circuit between two boxes.
- Read and interpret schematic wiring diagrams and new construction drawings.
- Perform electrical work including switching, testing and repairs on live line electrical systems up to 480 volt range.
- Attend mandatory trainings (e.g., Roadway Worker Safety, etc.) to obtain/maintain all required qualifications to safely perform job duties.
- Perform roadway worker duties (e.g., perform Look-Out, Watchman, etc.) to ensure the safety of the work group.
- Recognize the hazards of electricity and the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform electrical work safely.
- Assess situations to identify possible hazards and take appropriate safety precautions (e.g., PPE usage, etc.).
- Obtain electrical clearances and provide electrical Lock out Tag out protection.
- Inspect electrical systems, apparatus, components, circuitry and fixtures using test equipment (e.g., ohmmeters, voltmeters, ampmeters, megger testers, and test lamps) to identify defects for repair, hazards and to ensure system compatibility and proper functionality.
- Install ground leads and connect power cables to equipment (e.g., motors and pumps).
- Use hand and power operated electrical trade tools (e.g., wire cutters, wire strippers, drills, saws, pipe cutter and threader, etc.) to perform electrical work.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsREQUIRED:
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing residential, commercial or industrial electrical work. Graduation from a recognized vocational school or trade apprenticeship may be considered in lieu of experience.
- Must complete Metro-North respirator training and certification within 30 days of job award.
- Must provide personal hand tools necessary for job.
- Must maintain Industrial Truck certification for Class E industrial trucks (provided by company).
- Must use/wear all safety related equipment in the performance of their duties.
- Internal candidates are required to become qualified for the position within 15 days of bidding the position.
PREFERRED:
- Licensed NYS electrician or equivalent.
- Experience performing residential, commercial, or industrial electrical work.
- Valid driver's license.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Must be familiar with the New York City Electrical Code and the National Electrical Code (NEC); knowledge of electrical principles and concepts; knowledge of transformers, fuses, circuit breakers, circuitry, motor starters; ability to read schematic wiring diagrams; skilled in bending conduit; skilled in using electrical trade tools; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; basic reading comprehension ability; interpersonal skills; mechanical aptitude; ability to exercise independent judgment; ability to anticipate and analyze problems and take corrective actions; written and verbal communication skills; ability to work well in a group; ability to multi-task; must be able to function effectively under changing priorities; knowledge of applicable safety rules and must be safety conscious.
Rate of PayThe starting rate of 65% for this position is equivalent to $23.76. The wage progression scale is as follows: Year 1=65%>Year 2=70%>Year 3=75%>Year 4=80%>Year 5=92%>Year 6=100%. The full rate of pay is $36.55/hour.This salary is non-negotiable, based on the IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement.An exception may be granted for a journeyman rate to anyone who has one of the following:
- New Hire candidates who meet one (1) or more of the criterion as enumerated below will qualify for the expedited wage progression for Journeymen:
- Four (4) years of full-time experience as an Electrical Worker; which includes the following job titles and industries:
- Electrical, Electronics, or Communications Worker in the Armed Forces
- Electrician, Electrical Worker which includes industrial, railroad, commercial, residential and low voltage electrical work
- Utility or Power Plant Electrical Worker
- Electronics, Communications or Computer Technician/Engineer
- Electrical Apprentice or Electrical Helper
- Automotive Electronic Technician, with ASE certification
- HVAC experience consistent with the type of HVAC work performed by Metro North Electrical Workers, with Refrigerant Recovery Certification
- Possession or completion of the following educational degrees, apprenticeships or trade program certifications. Where applicable, with required practical work experience accompanied thereto for a total of four (4) years: A four (4) year Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology or associated Electrical field from an accredited college or university
- A two (2) year Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology or associated Electrical field from an accredited college, plus two (2) years of full-time experience performing electrical work
- An accredited Trade (Vocational) School Certificate in Electrical Technology or associated electrical field, of which completion requires at least one (1) year of classroom training, plus three (3) years of full-time experience as an Electrical Worker. If additional time is spent in formal classroom training within the accredited Vocational School curriculum, then the combination of classroom and full-time experience as an Electrical Worker must equal at least four (4) years total
- Completion of at least four (4) years of an Electrical Apprenticeship Program
- Completion of at least two (2) years of a full-time Electrical Apprenticeship Program, plus two (2) years of full-time experience as an Electrical Worker
- Possession of a valid and current FCC License

Details of working conditions include, but are not limited to:
- Must be able to work various days, shifts and locations.
- Works within limits of Grand Central Terminal exposed to various temperature and weather conditions from extreme cold to extreme heat.
- Works at heights up to 100 feet high on scaffolds, ladders and lifts.
- Works with voltages ranging from 12 VDC to 48 VDC and up to 480 VAC.
- Works in close proximity to moving railroad equipment and/or track machinery.
