DescriptionThis position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization. The Fitness Instructor instructs group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. The Fitness Instructor assures the well-being for each participant while using YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies in accordance with their training. This results in a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Demonstrate the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in relationships with colleagues, members, volunteers, vendors and guests.
- Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes in accordance with their training and YMCA guidelines, and supports members and program participants in achieving and celebrating their goals.
- Develops, establishes, and maintains positive healing relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants connect with each other and the YMCA through motivational support and guidance.
- Modifies programs and sessions as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs, and effectively builds community.
- Maintains proper attendance records, prepares required reports as directed, as well as provides participants with recommendations.
- Maintains client confidentiality and safe emotional space at all times.
- Maintains working knowledge of health and wellness trends to provide effective information and support to members, and obtain CEU's/CEC's as per certification requirements.
- Ambassador of all YMCA programs with a focus on Health and Wellness programs, promotions, schedules, and member engagement.
- Maintains physical presence at all times with participants and remains aware of surroundings.
- Knows, follows, and enforces all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures, and those for the prevention of child abuse.
- Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings.

- Certification and accreditations in areas of expertise, and programs assigned.
- At least one year of group exercise experience preferred.
- Must be able to demonstrate fitness instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Possess the ability to observe and instruct participants in proper fitness techniques.
- Must be people oriented, possess professional communication and organizational skills.
- Must have a passion for helping others, patience, and the ability to adjust to evolving situations.
- Demonstrated ability to teach and assist in fitness activities within a busy Health and Wellness environment.
- Ability to work well with others in a largely diverse population.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including some weekends and holidays.
- Must obtain YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification within 60 days of hire.
- Valid CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required within 60 days of hire.
