Title: School Resource OfficerReports to: Chief of Richmond County Schools PoliceTerms of Employment: Full-TimeQualifications: • Certified Law Enforcement Officer
  • Experience in law enforcement preferable
Supervises: NoneEssential Job Functions:
  • To establish and maintain liaison between school security personnel and other SROs assigned to school campuses
  • To inform the students of their rights and responsibilities as citizens
  • To provide liaison between students and social agencies that provide needed services
  • To act as a liaison resource to the principal in investigating criminal law violations occurring in the school or on school property
  • To protect lives and property for the citizens and public school students
  • To enforce federal, state and local criminal laws and ordinances, and to assist school officials with the enforcement of Board of Education policies and administrative regulations regarding student conduct
  • To provide security for special school events or functions, such as PTA meetings, at the request of the principal or the safety manager
  • To assist with traffic control during the arrival and departure of students
  • Confer with the principal to develop plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations on or near the campus or involving students at school-related activities
  • Abide by school board policy and applicable law concerning interviews should it be necessary to conduct formal law enforcement interviews with students or staff on property or at school functions under the jurisdiction of the school board
  • Act proactively in dealing with situations that require security/law enforcement involvement as they arise
  • Serves as a liaison between the school and other law enforcement agencies, including the courts and social services
  • Work with administration to determine daily work schedule
Must be able to:
  • Prepare, read and comprehend a variety of job-related forms, reports, spreadsheets, maps, plans, records, documentation and correspondence in all
  • Speak to individuals or groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence
  • Respond adequately to inquiries or complaints
  • Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently by using communication device or system is required (telephone, portable radio)
  • Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
  • Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations
  • Be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons
  • Operate a motor vehicle
  • Operate/use a variety of communication machines/equipment/devices
  • Walk, run, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel and crouch
  • Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions
  • Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels
  • Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment
Working EnvironmentThe usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing.
