Job OverviewThis job announcement will be accepting candidate submissions until October 21, 2024. NOTE: Must use MM/DD/YYYY date format for experience on resume. The Air Force Research Laboratory, Information Systems Division (AFRL/RIS) is seeking to hire two (2) DR-II scientists or engineers to research and explore new approaches, experiment and test, and develop and integrate innovative Air Force information-centric technologies for the warfighter, using cutting edge Machine Learning (ML), mission information management, and autonomous AI technologies to accomplish leaps in C2 decision support and the rapid distribution of actionable information for operations. Roles and responsibilities of this position include:
  • Collaborate with research teams developing information solutions for tactical communications environments, agile comms/networks, and autonomous ML (active learning, reinforcement learning, explainable AI, generative AI, etc.), and information-centric solutions for Agile Combat Employment (ACE).
  • Serves as the Project Lead for ML-based efforts advancing mission information systems, including design, architecture, integration, field experiments, and transition of system of systems technologies utilizing AI/ML techniques and optimization. Example focus areas include: ML for sparse data encodings, drift detection, prioritization, metadata characterization, orchestration, etc.
  • Prepare reports and briefings; coordinates with customers, peers, DoD organizations, and management on technical requirements capture, information architectures and engineering, development of complex test activities. Develop and manage research strategies, project roadmap, lead and coordinate S&T activities, and self-direct collaborative and mentorship activities with junior scientists.
  • Address the limitations of current AI/ML state-of-the-art technologies by architecting, engineering, or developing for future AF operational replicator concept and rapid ML lifecycle management, to include: operationalizing data using LLMs, CNN, RRN and other cutting edge approaches for geospatialization, altPNT, simplifying ML expression/analysis for warfighter use.
  • Cultivate stakeholder engagement and foster partnerships, translating customer operational needs to technical/programmatic goals and objectives.
  • Travel may be required.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain the required Secret security clearance
  • S&E candidates must possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree from an ABET accredited academic institution.
  • This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position that requires Practitioner Level certification in Engineering & Technology Management (ETM). The selectee will have two years to meet ADPD requirements.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the DR-I, or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized Experience is experience directly related to the position that was performed at a level equivalent to the grade directly below the position.

Desired Qualifications
  • A Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of data models and data representation methods
  • Computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, efficient program structures)
  • Computer engineering fundamentals (computer structures, computer networking)
  • 3+ years experience of designing, developing information management and/or communication systems.
  • Experience working with diverse teams (e.g. AF civilian, military personnel, DoD services, contractors, academic or industry subject-matter experts)
  • Artificial Intelligence and /or Machine Learning tools and techniques
  • Programming skills - python, java, mobile SDKs, C/C++
  • Linear algebra, calculus, other advanced math
  • Experience in written/oral communication activities
