POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs a variety of sleep studies in order to diagnose the type and extent of sleep disorders, as directed by a physician. Collects and transmits biological specimens for analyses. Performs and records routine patient assessment. Scores sleep records and documents other test results. Calibrates and adjusts equipment, including troubleshooting minor problems.

**Band 1:** **Polysomnography Technologist I with Limited License**

The Polysomnography Technologist I (NYS Permit) under the supervision and direction of Medical Director, completes polysomnographic hookups monitoring sleep/wake physiology and sleep pathology in laboratory setting recognizing when clinical and/or technical interventions are needed to ensure quality data and patient safety. Must take RPGST Boards within 6 months. Must have NYS Registration within a year of hire.

**Band 2:** **Polysomnography Technologist II with NYS License**

The Polysomnography Technologist II (NYS license) exercises skill, knowledge and judgment in the principles and methods of polysomnography. The technician performs comprehensive Polysomnographic testing and analysis under physician's orders. The technician works independently, is able to problem solve equipment problems, performs specialized procedures, and is capable of generating a report that accurately summarizes all parameters of the polysomnogram. Has knowledge of sleep/wake physiology and sleep pathology as it occurs in the laboratory setting. Ensures quality data and patient safety.

**TYPICAL DUTIES** **:**

**Sleep Study Preparation and Set-up**

+ Reviews the patient's history and verify the medical order.

+ Follows sleep center protocols related to the sleep study ordered.

+ When patient arrives, verifies identification, collects documents, and obtains consent for the study. Explains the procedure and orient the patient for in center sleep testing. Provides age-appropriate patient education.

+ Selects appropriate equipment and calibrate for testing to determine proper functioning, and make adjustments, if necessary. Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.

+ Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization if running a PAP study.

**Procedures**

+ Follows procedural protocols (such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.) to ensure collection of appropriate data.

+ Performs appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required adjustments.

+ Follows lights out procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory, and heart rates, etc.).

+ Performs data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify, correct, and document artifact.

+ Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.

+ Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).

+ Follows lights on procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeat the physiological and instrument calibrations and instruct the patient on completing questionnaires, checking for completeness, etc.).

+ Assists with scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.

+ Assists with scoring clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) utilizing AASM standards.

+ Assists with the generation of accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.

+ Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education, as required.

+ Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform HSAT equipment preparation and data download.

+ Performs patient education and instruction appropriate for HSAT procedures.

+ Demonstrates adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures for HSAT devices.

+ Assists with scoring HSAT recordings according to AASM scoring parameters; identify artifact, inadequate signals, and study failures, and generate an accurate report.

**Service Management and Essential Skills**

+ Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.

+ Performs routine equipment care and maintenance, and inventory evaluation. Demonstrates troubleshooting skills - understanding limitations of software and potential issues that can arise.

+ Maintains current CPR or BLS certification.

+ Demonstrates computer skills appropriate for the position.

+ Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills.

+ Demonstrates appropriate social, customer service and teamwork skills.

+ Demonstrates critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision.

+ Follows HIPAA policies to maintain the privacy and security of patient information.

+ Demonstrates ability to follow direction.

+ Responds to sleep patients' procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.

+ Assists with patient education utilizing sleep center specific protocols.

+ Adhere to sleep center policies related to quality assurance.

**QUALIFICATIONS** **:**

**Required:**

+ AAS in Polysomnography Technologist. **Note:** **Polysomnography Tech** **III or IV could be considered based on experience.**

+ NYS license as a Polysomnographic Technologist. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified.

**Preferred:**

+ Clinical experience in health care field preferred

+ Customer service skills, computer use agility, ability to work well in a team

**Pay Range**

Pay Range: $25.79 - $33.52 Hourly

_The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._
