Job Summary AFL's OTS Division is currently looking for a Fiber Technician to assist with our DAS and BTS builds. The Fiber Technician is responsible for all aspects of Fiber including but not limited to installing, terminating, testing and splicing. Only local candidates will be considered. 80% Travel Required Responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean, neat, professional appearance... Wearing the company uniform during all project related duties unless specifically directed otherwise by a superior.
  • Accept direction and critiques from Team Members in higher classifications.
  • Ability to understand complex wiring diagrams and installation instructions.
  • Cabling & Termination
    • Must have basic copper termination skills
    • Ability to build closets (Mount and install backboards, cross connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware). Install grounding for racks, equipment and cable as required. Complete all IDC connections (e.g. terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels).
    • Must perform testing: continuity test horizontal and riser cable; use of volt-ohmmeter; troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable; use a tone set.
    • Ability to install LC, SC, connectors, for both multi-mode & single-mode fiber
    • Must terminate simplex & duplex jumper cord
    • Must terminate & breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g. AFL/Corning/Commscope)
    • Must terminate & breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g. 3DNX)
    • Must terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber
    • Must install fan out kits including buffer tube
    • Must calculate end to end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for multimode & single-mode fiber
  • Testing
    • Ability to test using an OTDR and Fluke DTX 180
    • Ability to troubleshoot using an OTDR to identify and correct problems end to end, and Network wide
  • Splicing
    • Must perform mechanical splicing with all types of fiber cable
    • Must perform fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable
    • Must perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices
  • Must complete all paperwork accurately and on time specifically: timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers and others as required.
  • Understands, adheres to, and promotes the Environmental, Health & Safety policies of AFL Telecom.
  • Attend classes and training sessions, as requested by AFL management, to obtain and maintain vendor certifications.
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience with install, terminate, test & splicing of low voltage & fiber optical cables.
  • Ability to understand complex wiring diagrams and installation instructions.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Finger & wrist dexterity & hand/eye coordination.
  • Ability to work from heights such as man lifts, scissor lifts & roof tops utilizing proper fall protection.
  • Ability to use small hand tools.
  • Ability to use power tools.
  • Climbing of stairs, ladders, and/or scaffolds.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, lift up to 50 lbs., and drive a vehicle.
Working Conditions
  • Job is usually performed in indoor/outdoor environments under multiple environmental conditions.
  • Ability to accept assignments that involve travel away from immediate district office area based on client needs, business needs and project scope.
  • Exposure to noisy or dusty conditions; chemicals & solvents; mechanical, electrical, and/or other hazards.
  • General hours of Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm. But ability to provide support during and outside regular business hours is required.
  • Must be able to work in the United States.
